ANNA NYESŐ, Pres, of Lackawanna Hung. Young People Society A BIGGER, BETTER, STRONGER UNION — WHY AND HOW? By A, F. A. — Pittsburgh. So important and so self-evident is the question of why we should have a bigger, better, stronger union and Y. P. organization that at first the question seems almost impertinent; yet, when we examine the topic a little more closely, we can readily understand why such a question has been raised and why it is confronting the young people today. Some sort of young people’s gathering is apt to be found in every church regardless of size; but their work, their ideals, and purpose differ as widely as the districts within which they are found. Yet, there should be five aims which should be incorporated into the work of all young peoples’ organizations. The first aim of every society should be to become more familiar with the Bible. No society can call itself a Hungarian Christian society which does not encourage the intelligent reading of the Bible. Aside from the fact that the Bible affords types of reading material that are found in modern fiction such as love, action, adventure, murder, reflection, and tragedy, the object of true Christianity and the teachings of Christ are imbeded. Second, it should be the aim of every society to promote, the work of Christ. So often have I heard, “What is the work of Christ?” The seeker will find the best explanation of that in the Bible. Promote the Christian brotherhood of man is the pledge societies take. Third, every Y. P. organization should aid the church both morally and materially. There can be no doubt in the mind of any person as to the necessity for aiding our churches in such times of worldwide catastrophe. Fourth, better attendance in church should be promoted. If we look into the Hungarian churches of today, we find that the young people element is sadly lacking. We shall find that the best attenders of the church are the old people — and particularly the women! Fifth, in collaboration with the fourth aim, to preserve the Hungarian churches. This is one of the most important aims. Immigration has stopped, and our responsibilities have doubled as a result. Don’t let the hard labors of our fathers in building these institutions take wings. They have built them for you! The second part of the question involves the practical possibility of building a bigger, better, stronger union and young people’s club. How is it to be done? The very fact that some of them are on the verge of collapse — if they have not already failed — demands information concerning the process by which we are to have a better organization. In the first place, we must take into consideration the type of young people with which we have to deal. Some are quiescent; others are boisterous; some are passionate; others have seemingly no interest; some are the type who question even their very being. How are we going to hold together these different types of elements and still continue with our objectives? The only possibe way is to have a wide and varied program. Emphasizing Bible training is not the only way we can approach the desires and the teachings of Christ; and those Unions and Young People’s Societies who have only this and nothing else to offer are apt to find themselves slowly but surely dwindling. We are living in an age where practically everything is questioned. People want to know things and be sure of them. So often has the question been raised as to the possibility, in some churches, of having seperate sermons for young people; or, if this cannot be done, to have the sermons jó szolgálatot tesznek lapunknak, ha támogatják azokat az üzleteket, amelyek lapunkban hirdetnek s ha a vásárlásnál hivatkoznak lapunkra.
