AZ IFJÚSÁG KÖRÉBŐL.

Our C. E. topic for March 27 is: “WHAT IS THE MEANING OF EASTER?’’

CONFERENCE ECHO’SA fine group of over fifty mens voices singing the time old inspiring hymn; “Jövel szent lélek’’ opened the magyar reformed presbyters conference held at the Hazlewood Magyar Reformed Church in Pittsburgh.

The body of presbyters assembled at this great conference were men our churches and our young poeple could well be proud of. They all represented heritage, stock and other fine qualities of magyar tradition. They were gathered for a common cause, to save our greatest magyar heritage, our reformed faith. The magyar church, which is often regarded as a fast disappearing black cloud, showed traces of a silver-lining at this conference. This was especially evident by the nature of the subjects and the spirit in which they were discussed. Over one third of the men present and about that number of speakers were men of Hungarian-American training.

From the standpoint of our young people, this conference hit the bass drum with a bang! when a number of our aged magyar men stood up and confessed the fact that our young people must be given greater recognition and more opportunities in church life. It was further indicated that the saving of our faith did not rest upon any particular language. Another topic of great import discussed was the need of greater spiritual life and Christian living among our magyar people. The conference accepted wholeheartedly the five point spiritual campaign sponsored by the English Ref. Church. A renewed spirit and attitude, such as Jesus possessed, was looking upon as the greatest need of our magyar churches. Another silver-lining! The sacrificial spirit of the conference was best shown when our magyar presbyters arose and said that dispite hard times, we must not be self-centered and selfish but we must do all within our means to help both home and foreign missions.

From the above, and the other similar vital subjects discussed it may be stated that our Magyar Church life is awakening! Our magyar presbyters are building and working for a firmer

foundation. This should be good news to all our young people. It is a challenge to our young people to co-operate! Mutual respect and understanding in the work of building the .Kingdom is a common Christ-like duty that brings joy and fruit abundant.

EGY VÁRATLAN KÉRDÉS.

Philadelphiában évekkel ezelőtt egy nagyhírű ügyvéd a cipőjét tisztittatta. A cipő-pucoló fiút, ki a munkát végezte, már régebben ismerte vidám, jó kedvéről, nyájas és tréfás kérdéseiről. Ma nagyon feltűnt neki a fiú komolysága, ki esdeklőleg nézett rá munka közben két okos nagy szemével. A régi szokás ellenére most az üdvözlő köszöntéstől eltekintve szótlanul folyt a munka, mig befejezést nem nyert. Ekkor hirtelen megtört a fiú hallgatagsága és e rövid kérdéssel fordult az ügyvédhez:

— Ösmeri és szereti Ön az Istent?

A komoly és igazság szeiető jogtudóst, ki, sajnos, sem egyházba nem tartozott, sem templomba nem járt, sem a vallásos dolgok iránt nem érdeklődött, nagyon meglepte a fiú kérdése. Eleinte, mivel a fiú szeretett tréfálni a leereszkedő ügyvéddel, azt gondolta, hogy e kérdés sem egyébb gyerekes viccnél, de mikor meglátta annak szomorú tekintetét, magában megdöbbent, mert be kellett önmaga előtt ismernie, hogy ilyen komoly kérdést még ő hozzá senki sem intézett. Átlátta, hogy e komoly kérdés megett nagyon komoly a háttér is. A kérdésre azért ő is kérdéssel felelt:

—- Miért kérdezed ezt tőlem fiam ?

Ekkor a fiú elmondta szomorú történetét.

— Tetszik tudni, én árva gyermek vagyok, apám régen elhalt és szegény özvegy édes anyámmal ketten tartjuk fent a családot, mert még van két kisebb testvérem és egy nyomorék nagyanyám. Most a házat, melyben eddig meghúzódtunk, le fogják rombolni s nekünk ki kell menni, de nincs pénzünk másikat bérelni.

Tegnap, midőn munkámból haza felé mentem, két férfi beszédét hallottam az utcán, kik közül az egyik azt mondta a másiknak, hogy a jó Isten segít mindenkin, aki őt szereti. Én hazamén ve egész éjjel gondolkoztam e felett és elhatároztam, hogy megkérdek valakit, aki az Istent ismeri és szereti, hogy mondja meg az Istennek, hogy én szeretem, de nem ismerem Őt s aztán kérje meg, hogy segítsen rajtunk.
