A short time ago I chanced across an article written by a prominent minister in criticism of the Young People’s Conference he attended several years ago. The critic contended that the conference began and ended by attempting to arouse an emotional response to the ideals of Christianity by means of high sounding eulogies -of Jesus and His life. Furthermore, that the conference leaders made no attempt to attach that emotion to specific tasks and projects. The fact that it is easier to adore an ideal character than emulate it, easier to study and read the Bible, eternally praising the wonderfulness of Christ than to live a Christian life and act as Christ would have us, explains probably the conventional tameness of our church to young people. We must take care that our Young People’s Work be not liable to the above criticism. Let us search ourselves truthfully and analyze our program. Are our meetings full of empty platitudes? When the Scripture is read, Bible verses are recited, emotional poems pertaining to the topic are read, and even when our sentence prayers are uttered, do we think of what we are doing? Reading, memorization, recitation and oral prayers are beautiful, valuable and necessary, provided they are purposeful and intelligent. The highest ethical life requires an honest and searching intellect — an intellect which will discover to the eyes of our young people the tremendous chasms between the ideals of our faith and the social realities in which we live. As intelligent, thinking, Christian young people it behooves us to face the fact that our industrial life is unethical, that our social order is far from ideal, that nations are imperialistic and that Christ’s teachings have not yet permeated the thought and action of the Christian world. When we are willing, as active Christ-like young people, to meet these issues and consider them as part of our religious work and act upon them as He would have us, then truly are we becoming members of His church. An organism which is not used, tends to die; a principle not applied, tends to vanish, and therefore, unless we exercise our Christian ideals, faith and belief in everyday contacts and relationships, they will tend to disappear. The problems of today are acute largely because Christ’s principles have not been fully applied to the everyday affairs of life. It was thought sufficient to be Ghristian within the four walls of the church. If we desire to ameliorate our lives and to hasten the advent of the Kingdom of God on earth, we must be active, thinking Christians and not mere sentimentalists. If we would become true followers of the Masters, we must not only read the Bible and study His life, but we must also endeavor to apply His principles and divine teachings to our pleasures, our home-life, our work and to the varied problems of society. Let us, then, be doers of the Word, not hearers only, “lest we delude ourselves”. Mrs. John Bőtty. AZ OLASZ IFJÚSÁG. Nem azokról az olasz ifjakról van szó, akik szülőhazájukban élnek, hanem azokról, akiket, vagy akiknek szüleit hozzánk teljesen hasonlóan elsodort az Élet s a világ legkülönbözőbb részein élik életüket. A külföldi olasz ifjúságról szól ez a kis történet. Egy olasz folyóirat, a “Tamburino”, amely a külföldi olasz ifjúság lapja s Rómában jelenik meg, versenykérdést adott fel olvasóinak részére. A kérdés az volt, hogy ki tudja legrövidebben, legtalálóbban s leghelyesebben megmondani azt, hogy micsoda Olaszország? A föltett kérdésre tizenkétezer válasz érkezett be. Először álljunk meg ennél a számnál. Még kimondani is sok: tizenkétezer olyan külföldön élő olasz ifjú és leány, akiket a legközvetlenebbül érdekel a kérdés: micsoda Olaszország? Tizenkétezer olyan külföldi olasz ifjú, akiknek szivében, lelkében ott él az olasz nemzeti öntudat még akkor is, ha talán már törve beszéli apáinak nyelvét! Nem szégyenük olasz voltukat. Büszkék arra s ez a nemzeti büszkeség, ez a honszeretet még jobban kitűnik az adott válaszokból. Az első dijat, egy motorbiciklit, egy South Walesben élő ifjú ember, Gazzi Bartolomeo nyerte ezzel a válaszszal: “Olaszország az a hon, amelyet ha elvennének tőlem: meghalnék érte.” Egy Amerikában élő ifjú ezt válaszolta: “Olaszország az a föld, ahol Mussolini született.” Brazíliából egy leány, Antonietta Marconi igy felelt a kérdésre: “Olaszország a mi nagy szerelmünknek állandó bámulata, mindnyájunknak anyja!”
