Gerlac András Horváth, O.Praem., M.A. Canon Regular of St. Michael’s Norbertine Abbey in Silverado, CA Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine. We said farewell to a special Hungarian who is forever woven into the tapestry of Orange County. Father Gerlac Horvath, known and loved by many of us, was laid to rest. He always loved being with fellow Hungarians and attended our Hungarian functions as long as he was able. An amazing man. Rest in Peace Fr. Gerlac. Our confrere, Rev. Gerlac András Horváth, died in the peace of Christ and fortified by the Sacraments of the Church and the prayers of the brethren on March 12, 2018. He was 96 and had been in failing health for several years. Fr. Gerlac was born in Pusztamagyaród, Hungary, on September 11, 1921. He graduated from the Norbertine Gymnasium at Keszthely in June, 1941, and entered St. Michael’s Norbertine Abbey in Csorna later that summer where he was vested with the white habit on August 14, 1941. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 16, 1946. Fr. Gerlac left Hungary in 1950 at the time when St. Michael’s Abbey in Csorna was suppressed by the Communists and went to Rabat, Morocco, where he was Associate Pastor at St Joseph’s Norbertine Parish from 1950 - 1953. He immigrated to the United States in October of 1953 where he studied at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and obtained an MA in French Literature and Civilization, and Classical Latin in 1955. Fr. Gerlac taught French Literature at Carroll College, Helena, Montana from 1955 - 1957. In 1957 he joined the other refugee confreres from the Hungarian abbey of Csorna as they gathered to form a new Norbertine community in Southern California. He taught French Language at Mater Dei High School from 1957 to 1973. In 1973 he moved to St. Michael’s in Silverado. He taught Latin, Religion, and European History (Middle Ages) at St. Michael’s Prep from 1974 to 1992. Fr. Gerlac was the last of the seven founding priests, all Hungarian, of St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado to depart for eternal life. He was interned at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest on Wednesday, March 14. Surrounding his grave are his six Hungarian brothers in Christ: Fr. László Fr.
