Hungarian National Security Expert Join Trump’s White House Staff According to news site Business Insider, Sebastian Gorka, a national security expert who has served as a Fox News contributor and national security editor for far-right news site Breitbart, is “expected to join President Donald Trump’s White House.” He was also charged with a weapons offense last year for attempting to bring a gun onto an airplane. The news came from an unknown source, who also claims that Gorka will likely receive a position in Trump’s National Secu­rity Council. Gorka, who was born in London to parents who had fled the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, has also in the past served as an advisor to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He also worked at the Hungarian Ministry of Defense during the Prime Ministry of József Antall, Hungary’s first PM following the end of Communism. Mr. Gorka entered Hungarian public life following the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001, when he appeared multiple times on Hungarian television as a security expert. Following a break with Orbán and Fidesz in 2006, Gorka briefly attempted to establish his own alterna­tive right-wing party in Hungary, called the New Democratic Coalition (Új Demokratikus Koalíció), but without much success. In an interview with Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet, Gorka said that he cur­rently has no political relationships or consulting roles in Hungary, “only personal relationships.” Speaking of Hungarian and the Orbán government, Gorka has said that, after years of dancing between Russia and NATO, Hungary has to decide “if it will follow the Western and Western European system of values, or not,” and added that “this cannot be put off forever.” In addition to his activities in Hungary, Gorka, who holds a PhD in political science, has taught at Georgetown University, and has served as an advisor to the US Military and the Department of Defense. Gorka has written for Breitbart since early 2014, and in addition wrote for the Hungarian weekly maga­zine Heti Válasz in 2005. He is the author of a New York Times best-selling book, entitled Defeating Jihad. Hungarian FM: ‘Russia not a threat’ Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has said Russia should not be perceived as a threat to Hungary or any other NATO or EU state. Criticizing Western sanctions against Russia, Szijjarto said Hungary is seeking closer ties with Moscow. “I don’t see Russia as a threat to Hungary,” the foreign minister said in an interview with Reuters on Friday. “Russia would not attack any NATO member state. I don’t think it would be in Russia’s inter­est,” the foreign minister said. The real “current threat” to the world is Islamic State (IS, for­merly ISIS/ISIL), the Hungarian minister said, suggesting that the Western military alliance should “have a bigger role” in deterring Islamic terrorism. “Currently if we speak about threats... I see ISIS as a threat... A non-state actor is the most serious threat to the civilized world. And in this regard... NATO could have a bigger role,” he told the news agency. Szijjarto added that in regard to this threat he agreed with new American President Donald Trump, saying that NATO had failed to successfully protect the world from IS. The minister said Budapest is set on closer ties with both Moscow and Washington, and expects a “massive improvement” with the latter under the new administration. Meanwhile, the West should think about “really high-level” talks with Russia to improve relations, he said. The policy of economic restrictions has proven ineffective, he added, saying that anti-Moscow sanctions have harmed Europeans themselves. “Hungary’s position on the [anti-Russian] sanctions is that [they are] useless,” Szijjarto told Reuters, rt.com He has also written policy papers for Trump and was paid by Trump’s campaign for ‘policy consulting.’ Gorka, whose official relationship with Fox News was reportedly ended “when he informed executives of his new position,” is far from the first Breitbart face to join Trump’s administration. Stephen Bannon, Breitbart’s chairman, had served as the campaign’s CEO and currently holds the title of White House Chief Strategist; in addition, Julia Hahn, a “hardline immigration writer for Breitbart,” is also expected to join Trump’s White House as a special assistant. According to the Washington Post, in early 2016 Gorka was charged with a weapons offense after attempting to bring a 9mm handgun onto an airplane at DC’s Reagan National Airport. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials said that the gun was detected and con­fiscated. hungarytoday.hu TI: Croatia and Hungary are ‘new face of corruption’ Perceived corruption in Croatia and Hungary is so high that both have dropped in global rankings when compared to last year, according to Transparency International (TI). Carl Dolan, who heads the anti-corruption NGO’s office in Brus­sels, described the two on Wednesday (25 January) “as the new face of corruption in Europe”. His comments, posted on a blog on TI’s website, followed the pub­lication of the NGO’s annual corruption perception index. Out Wednes­day, the survey noted Croatia and Hungary have now joined the ranks of the worst performers in the EU alongside Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, and Romania. The survey ranks some 176 countries and scores them on a 0 to 100 scale, with 0 being perceived as highly corrupt and 100 as being very clean. Bulgaria scored the worst among EU states with 41, followed by Greece (44), Italy (47), Romania (48), Hungary (48), and Croatia (49). Dolan faulted the crackdown on civil society and other independent institutions in Croatia and Hungary for their worsening performance. Both governments were also embroiled in scandals last year. In one case, Hungary’s government allegedly funneled money from the Cen­tral Bank to friends and family. Such moves are part of a broader trend to muscle in new laws and rules that favour “a ruling party and its cronies”, said Dolan. In an email to this website, Dolan also said the EU leadership had failed to properly address the corruption that was eroding confidence in political institutions. Other big issues like terrorism, the UK’s departure from the EU, and the refugee crisis, have led EU leaders to neglect what he described “as a slow-burning corruption crisis in its midst.” He noted, for instance, that the publication of a European Commis­sion report on corruption has been delayed by more than a year. “This complacency towards corruption is the perfect fuel for a fast­burning crisis,” he said. EU states also rank as the best performers in the global survey, however. Tied with New Zealand, Denmark comes out as the world’s cleanest with a score of 90. Finland is next best at 89 followed by Sweden at 88.
