AMERICAN English Page Hungarian Journal In Remembrance Of “The Hungarian Shakespeare” János Arany was born 200 years ago. On the 2nd of March 1817 János Arany was born as the youngest of ten children. Because of tuberculosis running in the family, only two of the siblings lived beyond childhood. Beyond his hard family history, he lived in a turbulent period of Hungarian history as well. In spite of all this, he became one of the most important writers and poets of Hungarian classical literature, and he is often said to be the “Hungarian Shakespeare” as well. Arany wrote over 40 ballads, including his most famous, the Bards of Wales, which served as an allegorical criticism of Absolutist Habsburg rule over Hungary after its ill-fated 1848-49 revolution. His epic poem, the Toldi trilogy, was inspired by nobleman Miklós Toldi, remembered as a legendary hero in Hungarian folklore. Toldi served in the army of King Louis the Great in the 14th century. He translated three Shakespeare dramas, namely A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet and King John, into Hungarian. János Arany, elderly and world-weary, died on the 22nd of October, 1882, in Budapest. The poem of the Walesi Bardok, The Bards of Wales, tells of their legendary slaughter at a banquet in Montgomery Castle by King Edward the First, after they refused to sing his praises as their conqueror. Hundreds of years later, János Arany wrote his own tale of the bards in 1857, after refusing to write a poem celebrating the Emperor of Austria, Franz Joseph, in the decade of absolutist rule following the defeat of the Hungarian revolution of 1848. While Arany’s 19th Century ballad is still taught in all schools in Hungary, many living in Montgomery, Powys, have never heard of it. On the 2nd of March bbc.com reported on a special celebration of the life of the poet behind the “Bards of Wales” that was held in Budapest. The Mayor of Montgomery, Eric Fairbrother, also participated on the event in Hungary and said that the poem was a “great link” between the two countries. “Local people know very little about it at all. In fact it is only recently that I have been spreading the word about it,” Mr Fairbrother told BBC Radio Wales’ Good Morning Wales programme, ahead of his visit to mark 200 years since Arany’s birth. During the televised ceremony, which was attended by President of Hungary János Áder, Mr Fairbrother presented the honorary status of Freeman of Montgomery to the famous poet posthumously. Usually we think that there are sports, such as skiing, that can only be performed while we are fit and young. Well, probably we can stay fit even if we are getting old. The living example of the “third-age-fitness” is an elderly Hungarian man who is still can be found on the ski slopes, despite the fact that he is 106-years old. Let us to introduce Lajos Bátori from Michigan, USA. Mr Bátori remains an active skier despite having turned 106 years old last July. Lajos Bátori or -Lou Batori as the local people call him at Michigan’s Crystal Mountain Resort- is an active skier since he first conquered the mountains in his native Hungary at the age of 10, Batori started skiing sixteen years before he took his first chairlift ride in 1940. By the way, at Thomposonville there is the only reserved parking spot anywhere on the sprawling Northern Michigan getaway’s property, and it belongs to Lou Batori. He is probably the oldest active skiier in the world. He’s won several Nastar ski competitions, even taking part in them at the age of 100. Baton’s love for skiing as well as his age have made him a popular topic for various news organizations. He was even featured along with other members of the region’s 70-and-up ski club by CBS News in 2011. When asked about the key to his longevity, he always gives the same answer: “The three ingredients: A good wife, only drinking the best quality liquor and picking your parents carefully.” Lajos’s life seems to bear out the wisdom of his (admittedly slightly sarcastic) advice, as he lives an active and powerful life, regardless of his age. “Waiting to be carted away is a stupid waste of life,” he said, “You can replace anything - your shoes, your house, your belongings. He is an inspiration to everybody all over the world and we wish him many more years of shredding the gnar! hungarytoday.hu American Swim Coach Featured On Cover Of Hungarian Magazine Shane Tusup, Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu’s husband and coach, finds himself on newsstands throughout Hungary as he is for once featured on the cover of. Forbes Magazine. Swimmers and swim fans see a lot of Iron Lady Katinka Hosszú, especially those who live in Hungary, Hosszu’s home and training base. While the Iron Lady has been on her fair share of magazine covers, this week her husband and coach Shane Tusup was given the honor by the Hungarian edition of Forbes Magazine. “Forradalom!”, or “Revolutionary”, reads the cover of the Hungarian-language Forbes magazine this week, while Tusup wears his adopted homeland’s flag like a superhero’s cape. While Tusup has received plenty of praise as a coach to Hosszú, this is one of his first major nods from a brand outside of athletics. Over the past several years Hosszú, with Thsup’s guidance, has won hundreds of medals in international competition, including 200 gold medals from the FINA World Cup Series alone, three Olympic golds and one silver medal from the 2016 Rio Games, and broken a multitude of world records in both short and long course venues. While Hisup is undoubtedly a brilliant coach, Forbes, a business publication and news source, recognizes Tusup for his “revolutionary” approach to branding with the Iron brand and the sport of swimming as a whole. Forbes recognizes Tusup and Hosszú as a disruptive duo that is changing swimming in a way that no other swimmer ever has. Of course, Hosszú plays a major role in the branding and business side of the couple’s careers as professional athlete and coach, and has always been quick to dispel rumors that Thsup’s loud and sometimes harsh criticisms of Hosszu’s swims is representative of the couple’s home life. Tlisup gives credit to his parents and his upbringing for his ambition and great drive to coach and motivate one of the greatest swimmers of all time, his wife Katinka Hosszú. Ever since a Chinese reporter said Hosszú was seemingly made of iron because of her endurance and daring to take on relentless and brutal schedules in major international competitions, Hosszú and Tusup have embraced the nickname Iron Lady. Hisup, who swam at USC himself where he and Hosszú met, now spends most of his personal exercise time out of the water and in the weight room. A harmadik helyre a 2016-os játékokon Hosszú Katinkához hasonlóan háromszoros olimpiai bajnok Kozák Danuta került, a kajakossal kapcsolatban az újság megemlíti, hogy az állami győzelmi prémiumot illetően ő kereste eddig a legtöbbet olimpiai szerepléseivel, 169 millió forintot. A rangsorban helyet kapott a Veszprém kézilabdázója, Nagy László (4.), illetve a két úszó, Gyúrta Dániel (5.) és Cseh László (6.) is. A viszonylag sikeres Európa-bajnoki szereplés ellenére a legjobb helyezést elérő labdarúgó, Dzsudzsák Balázs csak nyolcadik lett.
