In many cases even the person concerned knows only very little about his or her Hungarian roots, while others are proud of their “magyar” background despite lacking the ability to say a word or two in the language of their parents or grandparents. Edward Teller, “Father Of The Hydrogen Bomb” A controversial figure and one of the most brilliant minds of the 20th century, Edward Teller (Ede Teller) was a Hungarian-born American nuclear physicist who was instrumental in the production of the first atomic bomb as well the world’s first thermonuclear weapon, the Hydrogen bomb. Born in Budapest in a rich Hungarian-Jewish family in 1908, Teller earned a degree in chemical engineering at the Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe. He received his Ph.D. in particle chemistry from the University of Leipzig in 1930, his doctoral dissertation dealt with one of the first accurate quantum mechanical treatments of the hydrogen molecular ion. In 1935, Teller was invited to the United States to become a Professor of Physics at the George Washington Universitiy. He was engaged as a theoretical physicist, working in the fields of quantum, molecular and nuclear physics. In 1941, after becoming a naturalized citizen of the U.S., his interest turned to the use of nuclear energy, both fission and fusion. In 1942, Teller was invited to be part of Robert Oppenheimer’s Manhattan Project. He first worked with fellow Hungarian scientist Leó Szilárd at the University of Chicago, and in 1943, he headed a group at Los Alamos in the Theoretical Physics division. However, his obsession with the H-bomb caused tensions with other scientists. As a life-long anti-communist, Teller continued to be a tireless advocate of a strong defense policy. He made headlines in the 1970s, promoting the development of nuclear fusion as an alternative to other sources of energy, and again in the 1980s, testifying in favor of the strategic missile defense system. He was the author of over a dozen books, mostly dealing with nuclear energy and defense issues. Teller was appointed Director Emeritus at the Livermore laboratory and senior research fellow at the Hoover Institution, positions that he held until his death. Teller received numerous awards during his career, including Hungary’s prestigious Corvin Chain, awarded to him in 2001. Teller suffered a stroke and died in Stanford, California in 2003. hungarytoday.hu Hívják ZSUZSÁT TEL: (310) 652-5294 FAX: (310) 693-5320 1-888-532-0168 dunatravel@earthlink.net Hungary Advertises $300k Residency Bonds To Africans “Gain permanent residency for you and for your family in the European Union”, says temptingly an advertisement published by the Hungarian government in the latest issue of English-language African magazine “NewAfrican”. The advertisement was discovered and published in Hungary by news site 444.hu on Thursday morning. In an attached article Balázs Garamvölgyi, Hungary’s honorary consul in Bahrain, says the Hungarian bond residency program primarily targets “middle- and upper-class” African families and it is “fully government backed and endorsed by the European Union.” The Hungarian residency bonds, previously targeted mainly China and the Middle East but recently also Africa, cost USD 300.000 each and so far 4.000 have been sold to applicants, the article reveals, hungarytoday.hu Hungarian Artist Makes World’s Biggest Bird Sculpture For NFL Team Atlanta Falcons Google Pays Tribute To The Hungarian Inventor Of The ______Ballpoint Pen A Hungarian artist has been assigned to create a giant bird sculpture to be erected in front of NFL side Atlanta Falcons new state-of-the-art stadium, news portal index.hu reported. Gábor Miklós Szőke is known primarily in Hungary for his sensational eagle monument standing in front of Budapest’s Groupama Arena, home of Hungarian first division football team Ferencváros. The talented Hungarian artist says Atlanta’s new 12,5-meter high and 20-meter wide falcon will be made of stainless steel and bronze, and it will be regarded the world’s biggest of its kind. “It is a brutally inspiring job, but an extraordinary responsibility too, the pressure on me is increasing from the beginning”, Szőke admits. The majestic work, capturing the moment of a touchdown, will be first erected in Szőke’s studio in Budapest, then dismantled and transported in pieces to the main plaza of Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. According to the plans, Atlanta Falcons will move to their new home next September and in 2019 the Superbowl final will take place in the super-modern arena, index.hu hungarytoday.hu 8530 Holloway Dr. #102 W. Did you know that the bail-point pen, commonly known as a “biro”, was invented by a Hungarian-Jewish journalist László Bíró? László Bíró was bom in Budapest in 1899. Writing a lot with the fountain pens of the time, but in the vicinity of newspaper presses, he noted that the thick, sticky newspaper ink dried far more quickly than the runny India ink used in fountain pens, which required blotting, drying and lots of patience to prevent smudges. He came up with the idea of using it in an internal cartridge that would not need refilling. Working together with his brother, György, a chemist, László developed a new type of pen made up of a ball that turned in a socket. As the ball turned, it picked up ink from a cartridge and rolled to deposit it on paper, much like a newsprint roller transfers an inked image to paper. Bíró presented the first prototype of the ballpoint pen at the Budapest International Fair in 1931, later patenting his invention in 1938. The Bíró brothers patented the invention in Hungary and in the UK, where it was later produced in huge numbers. The also patented it in Argentina, their new home, as they were among the thousands of Jews to flee Hungary in the Second World War. László Bíró passed away in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1985. To this day, the ballpoint pen is still referred to as the “Biro” in several countries across the globe, gotohungary.com and google.com/doodles hungarytoday.hu Október 7,2016 ÍD AMERICAN Hungarian Journal r AMERIKAI Magyar Hírlap
