5 . ■ “ —AMERICAN Hungarian Journai Written art from Hungary Hungary holds a rich tradition of textiles, including ornate and diverse embroidery work. There are over 20 styles of Hungarian embroidery. Most include floral motifs in geometric patterns, and the majority of patterns are linear and symmetrical. Kalocsa, Matyó, and Kalotaszeg are some of the most well-known styles. I’d like to share some information about Hungarian Kalotaszeg írásos from Transylvania. írásos, “written” in Hungarian, received its name from the process of writing or drawing the pattern on the fabric before stitching. Similar to crewel work, the stitching creates a raised line, traditionally done on linen. Whereas British crewelwork uses wool thread, Hungarian írásos is made with cotton thread. The stitch itself resembles a double chain stitch. írásos are stitched in all one color, red, blue, white, or black. Red symbolizes youth and health, blue stands for adulthood, maturity, and Sarah Pedlow, Owner/Designer wisdom, and black for mourning. Patterns were based on Renaissance and Baroque flowers and flourishes. The symmetry, full compositions that cover the space, and connecting vines and leaves were inspired by Persian Islamic art. Women have sewn tapestries to commemorate births, graduations, and weddings in their families and for gifts to their church community, as well as pillowcases and tablecloths. Linens for the home were originally sewn as part of dowries. The written style was not traditionally made for clothing. The style developed in the 1700s and became well-known internationally in the late 1800s and early 20th century, due to Kalotaszeg woman Gyarmathy Zsigáné, who promoted the embroidery in exhibitions in Brussels, Vienna, and St. Louis, Composer Béla Bartók collected textiles from the region in the early 1900s while recording folk music that influenced his work. Anthropologists and textile enthusiasts have since treasured Kalotaszeg írásos. Fewer and fewer women have been practicing the craft over the last 50 years. Today, apart from museums, one can find Kalotaszeg embroidery in the Hungarian Calvinist churches and the formal rooms in women’s homes. Some pieces are for sale at the market but they are often of lesser quality, stitched quickly to make money. The practice is disappearing due to the long, meticulous labor required and the pull of modern life. Like many organizations around the world promoting ethnic textiles and traditions, ThreadWritten Textiles supports Kalotaszeg írásos and the women who still practice this beautiful craft. ThreadWritten makes modern bags and home décor that combine traditional embroidery with contemporary design using fair trade principles. Sarah Pedlow is the owner and designer at ThreadWritten Textiles, a Bay Area business that aims to support women artisans, their communities and cultures, by paying fair trade wages, preserving the integrity of traditional styles and techniques within contemporary designs, and educating consumers about lesser-known crafts that are disappearing. She currently focuses on the work of artists from Transylvania, meaning parts of Romania with a strong Hungarian cultural heritage. She holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Rutgers University and a BA in Studio Art and French Studies from Scripps College. Her fine art work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Europe. He captains six APA teams on five different nights in the South Coast APA. His mother, Edith, is on all of his teams and has played over 1,400 matches herself His daughter, Chrystal, has 361 matches played. One time, at a Singles Regional, Chrystal had to play Edith in the semifinals, and guess who kept score? It is unique that in his family there are four APA members from four generations. Oscar owns a bar in Van Nuys that has hosted as many as 20 APA teams, despite the fact that the bar has only two pool tables. He has been known to recruit APA teams into other bars in the area, just so his teams will have someone to play! * Árpád Kupa 2014 Soccer championship with Hungarian teams September 26-27 Action Vegas Hungarian Soccer Club Las Vegas, Nevada McCarran Market Place Park More info: Misi: 702-239-1348 Gyula: 818-426-3620 The English Page Subscribe to the Hírlap! On Saint Stephen’s Day, we remember the enduring legacy of King Stephen I, who unified all Hungarians. The United States is proud of its role in honoring that legacy during the more than 30 years that we protected the Crown of St. Stephen on behalf of the Hungarian people. My own family will always be connected to Hungary. My grandmother Ida was born and raised in Budapest, before crossing the Atlantic for the United States near the turn of the 20th century. Today we share more than genealogical connections for so many. We also share democratic principles, economic interests, rich cultural ties, and a commitment to safeguard international peace and security. U.S. and Hungarian troops continue to serve together around the world as NATO allies. And together, we promote the rule of law, transparency, and good governance, both abroad and at home. The United States looks forward to continuing to work with Hungary in pursuit of our common goals in the years to come, state.gov German minister sees Hungary drifting away from EU values A member of the German cabinet expressed doubts about the Hungarian government’s commitment to EU values in an interview published by German daily Tagesspiegel. Minister of state for European Affairs Michael Roth said he has doubts that “the present Hungarian government adheres to basic EU values to the extent that is absolutely necessary”. His concern is not only with individual regulations in Hungary, Roth observed, but “it is the sum of attacks on European values that give rise to irritation”. He said the EU needs a mechanism less drastic than suspension of voting rights, as a response to violations of basic values, politics.hu Hungarian universities take precautionary measures for Ebola Three major Hungarian universities have taken precautionary measures in light of the Ebola outbreak before the start of the new academic year, daily Nepszabadsag said on Saturday. Debrecen University where more than 300 students are expected to arrive soon from Africa has sent them in cooperation with health authorities questionnaires and a statement to be signed, according to the paper. Health insurance and medical screening of all foreign students have also been ensured at the university in Hungary’s second largest city in the country’s east. Szeged University in southern Hungary has sent out a questionnaire and a declaration to 120 students expected to arrive from Nigeria. The doctor in charge of seeing to foreign students has also made preparations to take steps, if need be, Ferenc Bari, the dean of the faculty of medicine, told the paper. The University of Pecs said that all of their students are required to undergo medical examination at the start of each academic year. There are 76 African students studying at the institution located also in southern Hungary. Senior Hungarian health officials said that although the chances of the Ebola virus arriving in Hungary are slim, the authorities are maintaining constant contact with EU disease control experts. Deputy national medical officer Attila Kovács said that Hungary has no direct air services from western African countries. But the Budapest Liszt Ferenc international airport is ready to deal with any suspected case, he added.
