You who are created By the unhappy soul To be his guardian angel Whom he’ll always adore. Why do you try to seduce me With your smile when I brood? Why do you still instill my soul With this doubtful mood? Stay away from me now, You who cheered me on, I believed your smooth talk, Yet you let me down. You planted my garden Full of narcissus seeds You nurtured my trees there With warbling mountain creeks You showered springtime on me With a thousand flowers And spiced it all for me with Heavenly happiness. Every morning my thoughts fluttered Like the busy bees Flying with the rising warm breeze Towards my rose trees. Lacking only one thing To complete my gladness I asked for Lilia’s heart And my wish was granted. Alas my fresh roses Soon withered away My brooks and my green trees Dried out in a day My springtime and my joy Turned into winter gloom My good old world fell upon An unworthy groom Ah, if only you’d left Lilia,1* Just her all along I would not be intoning now Such a mournful song. In her arms the sad things I would soon forget And the laurels of others I would not regret. Leave me now, oh sweet Hope! Stay away from me ‘cause I know this toughness Will soon bury me. I feel that this torment Takes away my strength My soul yearns for heaven, My body for the earth. For me the meadows hold no flowers, The wheat fields are all charred, The mellow orchards are lifeless, The day gave way to night. Enchanting soft cadences, Vivid imaginings, Moods and hopes and Lilias, Goodbye, my sweet dreams! Translated by Susan Jancso Los Angeles, July 4th 2014 Giant Zsolnay Vases on Display in Budapest The two giant Zsolnay vases, shown on the enclosed picture, were presented finally together after 126 years, as a pair, during an intimate preview in Budapest on June 23, 2014. The event was attended by Mr. Tarlós and Mr. Pava, the mayors of Budapest and Pecs, a selected group of art historians, the media and the descendants of the Zsolnay family. The location was the New Budapest Gallery housed in the uniquely designed modern building nicknamed „Balna” (Whale) on the banks of the Danube. There have been only two giant vases designed by Julia Zsolnay and created at the factory in Pecs in 1889, identical in shape and size (almost 1 meter high) but with different decorations. The first, (pictured on the right) came from Mr. László Gyugyi who generously donated „his” to Pecs years ago as part of his vast collection. The vase on the left, the „other Julia vase” with pheasant décor, until now belonged to the collection of Mary Weber, now in her 90s, a descendant of Hungarian immigrants living in the US. Since Mr. Gyugyi gave his collection to Pécs, Mrs. Weber has been contemplating doing the same with her giant vase, which has been away from Hungary for over 100 years. The two art collectors met originally back in 1977 at an auction and have been in touch ever since. Now, with the help of Mr. Gyugyi the second vase made it back to Hungary and after a brief showing in Budapest, the two giant vases will soon be part of the permanent Zsolnay collection in Pécs. When reading about the history of the Zsolnay family, it has always impressed me how deeply founder Vilmos included his children, Miklós and especially his two daughters, Julia and Terez in the daily activities of the factory in Pécs. While Vilmos was traveling searching for distributors in London, Paris and Vienna; Miklós - using today’s terminology - was doing sales and marketing and making all the preparations for the World Exhibits; Julia and Terez not only supervised the painters and other workers in Pécs, they were instrumental in creating and perfecting the designs. We are talking about the 1870s when women were expected to marry young, raise children and take care of the household. This was, however, not the case in the Zsolnay family. Terez and Julia were encouraged by their father to get familiar with all areas of „running the business” from the daily supervision of the workers to studying and creating patterns. Vilmos, very careful with money, spared no expenses when it came to his children. He soon realized how creative and talented his daughters were, so he sent them to Vienna for months to study the literature in libraries, visit museums to observe Persian and Far Eastern patterns and ornaments, gather ideas. Terez and Julia did eventually get married and had children but continued to be involved well into their 70s in the life of the world famous factory. Talking about having it all! Oh, and they spoke several languages as it was important to establish close relationships internationally. It is hard to close this article on a sad note but I believe it is important to know that in 1948 when the factory was nationalized the family members (including Julia) who were also active employees of the factory, were given an hour to gather their belongings and leave the premises, their home, their studio. These two wonderful vases, which will soon be displayed together as they should be in Pécs, will serve as reminders that lives, ideas, political systems can be destroyed but true art will survive.
