Publishers Julius Jancso and George Matsik On Sunday, June 1st attorney Andrew Friedman received many distinguished guests and members at his Congregation in order to honor Chief Jim McDonnell, candidate for Sheriff, and CPA Ira Frankel. Just two days before the California Primary Elections, it was a good opportunity to meet some of the candidates up close, such as Genethia Hayes, Candidate for LAUSD, Board District 1, Andrew Cooper, Candidate for Superior Court Judge, Congressional Candidate Elan Carr, and of course Chief McDonnell. Many city and county dignitaries are regular guests at these annual events, such as Supervisor Mike Antonovich, City Council Member Paul Koretz, City Attorney Mike Feuer, and former Sheriff Lee Baca. Many members of the Los Angeles Hungarian community were present. In the course of the program, several interesting and inspirational speeches were heard. Supervisor Mike Antonovich, long-time friend of the Hungarian and Jewish communities expressed appreciation for Mr. Friedman’s work. Congressman Edward Royce spoke of Holocaust denial. City Attorney Mike Feuer was commending Chief McDonnell ás future sheriff. In addition to welcoming and mentioning all - and I mean ALL - those present by name, Founder and President Andrew Friedman commended Chief McDonnell, as well as a young candidate for Superior Court Judge, Andrew Cooper. Rabbi Leibovic introduced awardee Jim McDonnell, who then spoke to the gathering. Rabbi Rabinovitz introduced the second honoree, Ira Frankel, a modest man doing a whole lot of good without looking for recognition, whose son also had a few good words to say. Many serious subjects were brought up, but just as many jokes were cracked. The kosher food was excellent, and the thanks and congratulations go to Andrew Friedman, whose father Alex was also fondly remembered.
