An Evening of Gypsy Music, Good Food and Fine Entertainment at the Csárdás Hungarian Restaurant in Hollywood Csárdás owner Julius Jancso listening to Band Leader Danyi’s playing Band Leader Lőrinc Danyi playing for guest Steven Kovary, with Krisztina Kele looking on The Band. L to R: Antal Suki (clarinet), Sándor Kuti (cimbalom), Gábor Matyi (bass), Rihárd Danyi (violin), Band Leader Lőrinc Danyi (violin) Saturday night at the Csardas there was an air of excited expectation as the musicians were tuning their instruments and donning their red vests over the impeccable white shirts, tapping the rhythm with their spotlessly shiny shoes, watching the door for some last-minute stragglers before they start the music. It is not the first time Band Leader Lőrinc Dany comes to the Csárdás. Several times a year, Pongrátz Entertainment organizes North American tours for Hungarian musicians and singers. The difference is: this time Mr. Danyi brought his son Richi with him, who is an accomplished musician himself. The other young artist was Lacy Duka - both young men entertained the guests with solo performances and received enthusiastic applause. Sándor Kuti is also a “regular” at the Csárdás and his spectacular performances are the stuff legends are made of. We have seen him play “dueling zimbalists”, he can play blindfolded, and, to put it simply, he can plav better than anyone we know. Welcome back, Sanvi! The world famous Rajkó Gypsy Band offers a unique musical experience. Comprised of young gypsy musicians, this company was established in 1952. The youthfulness and prodigiousness of Rajkó is reflected in the fact that all of these gifted players begin their musical training at a very young age. The exceptional artistic standards of the Rajkó is are due to a unique schooling that concentrates on preserving and developing their cultural heritage of improvisation, an essential ingredient to their virtuosity. Last but not least, we applauded the wonderful voice and pleasant demeanor of singer Krisztina Kele. The multi-talented, slender and beautiful Krisztina possesses an operatic quality voice, she also writes books, and she knows what a bunch of Hungarians living abroad wants. So she sang tear-jerkers as well, such as “Gloomy Sunday”, but most of all good, rhythmic, lively songs that made all the feet tap. It was an evening of good cheer and great entertainment which we hope to repeat sometime soon. Piano Recital by Peter Toth Every once in a while after a recital, long after the program, some music will still linger on in our minds. That happened last Saturday evening, after hearing Peter Toth presenting the famous 3 B’s, Bach, Beethoven and this time the contemporary Hungarian master: Bartók. To say the least, the audience was ready for all the pianistic ‘fireworks’ that was expected from Mr. Toth, a well known pianist, performer of Franz Liszt’s energizing music. But this time, he played selections, covering a 300 year span in music. Mr.Toth is known in the Los Angeles area through his triumphant winnings of the international Liszt and also the Paderewsky piano competitions, and as such, the expectations were high. Opening with Bach’s popular Partita in B/flat major, was delightful, and set the mood for the evening. Toth has a definite, unmistakable touch, that is so decisive for everything he plays. It was truly fun to listen to the ancient, then popular dances of the collection. Allemande- Courante-Sarabande-2 Minuets and the famous sparkling Gigue, brilliantly sweeping, that sounded just as fresh and timely - although we don’t dance these on Saturday nights nowadays... Then the program shifted a hundred years, and we were amazed by one of the 32 Piano Sonatas: the Op.31#3, that Beethoven enriched the piano literature with, in 1802. Here, the fine Kawai piano assisted the artist to the many facets of Beethoven’s compositional variety and sounded excitingly beautiful and truly convincing. From the deep, loving tone of the beginning chords, to the last twirling Presto, the different characters of the movements were presented masterfully. Memorable was the playful tippy-toeing Scherzo. The whole Sonata truly sounded like, as if the artist became one with his instrument and by that, his interpretation was unanimous with the composer’s ideas. Bravo! for the concluding piece, Bartok’s Suite Op. 14. The audience received this 20th century composition enthusiastically. The differences of the 4 movements are truly a kaleidoscope of Bartok’s imagination, as well as almost like a mirror to the turmoil and contradictions of that time. Little wonder: here the artist’s interpretation came to it’s height. The inspiring music was totally understood and played by Mr.Toth In this reviewer’s opinion, his interpretation of this piece reaches far beyond the one that is available on recording by the composer -(!) It was truly enjoyable. Colorful piano sound, deep thoughts, brilliant pianism, perfection. The long, standing ovation by the audience was reciprocated by an encore: 3 Hungarian Folksongs from Csikmegye, arranged also by Bartók, played with authentic Hungarian feelings and spirit. Everyone left the Hall of the Hungarian Cultural Center with happy thoughts, wishing to hear more Recitals like this, ‘on par’ with any Carnegie Hall performances. We thank Mr.Peter Toth, for sharing his most intimate and/or happy thoughts with us through his music. We would like to hear him again.
