Times last November) 1) There has been a 14% decline in violent crimes and a 4 1 % decline in all crimes within the Sheriff’s jurisdiction. 2) The Sheriff genuinely cares about the “little people.” He personally served and fed hundreds of meals to the homeless at The Shelter last Christmas and will do so again this year. 3) Sheriff Baca is a leader in community-based policing. He has Advisory Councils from every ethnic, religious, and racial community in Los Angeles County. These individuals act as his eyes and ears in their respective communities. 4) Sheriff Baca has instituted numerous innovative programs involving education for member of the Department. Unfortunately, there are bad apples everywhere, but the vast majority of deputy sheriffs are honest, hardworking lawmen and women following the guidance of the Sheriff. 5) Members of the Department are able to utilize the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department University to further their education. 6) Innovative education programs have been created for the inmates. The inmates can take advantage of education-based programs while in custody so that they can further their education in their efforts of rehabilitation. 21st Century CALL & SAVE UP TO 18 % insurance customers ON YOUR HOMEOWNERS Sheriff Lee Baca's Retirement Party at the Csárdás Hungarian Restaurant By Susan Jancso Photography: Kati Kereki Attorney Gabor Szabó, Sheriff Lee Baca, Attorney Andrew Friedman, Commissioner, Government Services Veronika Reinelt, President of the Austrian-American Council, her husband Fred, Commissioner Dr. Frank De Balogh, Liliana Popov-Alexander, and the host, Hírlap Publisher Julius Jancso. On Tuesday, February 25 at the Csárdás Hungarian Restaurant in Hollywood, Sheriff Lee Baca was welcomed at a reception/retirement party that owner and Hírlap publisher Julius Jancso gave in his honor. Julius Jancso, whose idea it was to celebrate the career and achievements of the recently retired sheriff through his newspaper, welcomed the distinguished guests and shared a little story that shed light on the personality of Mr. Baca. Organizer and MC Commissioner Dr. Frank De Balogh, who helped to make the idea a reality, guided the presentations with an expert hand. Dr. László Kálmán, Consul General of Hungary presented the honoree with a plaque from the government of Hungary. Attorney Andrew Friedman, Commissioner of Government Services, related the story of a trip to Hungary with Leroy and wife Carol Baca last year. To commemorate it, he presented the former sheriff with a montage of photos from the trip. Dr. Friedman quoted from his article that had appeared in the L.A. Times last November, listing Mr. Baca’s greatest achievements, giving voice to his conviction that the greatness of any official can only be judged in the perspective of history, and that history will prove that Lee Baca was a great sheriff. Sheriff Baca in turn praised the help of “his eyes and ears in the ethnic communities”, the members of his advisory council. On behalf of the United Hungarian House, president and Hungarian Government Diaspora Council Vice President Miklós Pereházy made a gift of several books and a bottle of Hungarian Pálinka to the sheriff. Other speakers were Jim Lynch, Vice President of EASAC (Euro-American Sheriffs Advisory Council), and Councilmember Jeffrey Prang of West Hollywood. There were many members of the Advisory Council present, such as Ingrid Kern, Daniela Strate, Roswitha Zündler, as well as Veronika Reinelt, President of the Austrian-American Council, her husband Fred, and Liliana Popov-Alexander. On the part of the Hungarian Consulate General, there was Mr. Kálmán’s wife Csilla Báránv and Consul Olivér Pintér. Andrew Friedman’s invitees from his congregation included George, the manager of our branch of One West Bank. The Magyar Ház sent also Borbála Mező and Dr. Miklós Czaun,. Manager. Attorney Gábor Szabó was accompanied by three lovely ladies: Zsuzsa Szarka, Adriana Imel and Kaylin Danielson. Councilmember Tom LaBonge also paid a brief visit. The Jancsos invited their attorney George Chakmakis and his wife Bahar, George and Judith Solymár, and their friends Richard and Barbara Leyner, who are also Sheriff Baca’s friends. Our newspaper was also represented by myself, Attila and Andrea Hegedűs. George Matsik of the Magyar Napló was also there with his wife Babi, the best Hungarian hair stylist in Hollywood. Our professional photographer was Kati Kereki, and we’ll include a good sampling of his work here today. It was a memorable occasion, and Mr. Jancso extends his heartfelt thanks to all who made it so. We wish Sheriff Baca happy retirement! Julius Jancso, owner of Csárdás and publisher of the Hírlap, was so impressed by Sheriff Baca’s courtesy and kindness he decided to throw a Retirment Party for him, which turned out to be a great success and a memorable event for everyone involved.
