New Hungaricums: Herend Porcelain, Pálinka and Grape Marc Pálinka taste are part of both Hungarian everyday life and celebrations. In the words of Sándor Fazekas, “the workers at the world’s largest porcelain manufactory preserve values and create value; this porcelain embodies Hungarian genius. The product of centuries of craft production can now occupy its rightful place”. The manufactory and the porcelain produced here is a common treasure that belongs to all of us, and of which the Hungarian peoples can be proud. All three of the products that have been acknowledged today are national values we can be rightfully proud of. The majority of Herend Porcelain Manufactory belongs to the workers, but 25 + 1 shares are owned by the state. This is an excellent example of how the local community and the state, who represents the wider community, are able to work together for many years in the interests of achieving important common goals. The Hungaricum Committee has been working for months to compile a list of national values, and the law encourages local communities to collect national values that exist in their immediate vicinity. The Hungaricum Act was adopted by Parliament last spring and the Hungaricum Committee began operating last autumn. So far, cultural, intellectual and constructed heritage have been added to the list by law, but from now on, anything can become a Hungaricum as a result of “outside” initiatives: pálinka and grape marc pálinka were proposed by the National Pálinka Council, while Herend porcelain was suggested by the Herend Porcelain Manufactory Co. Today’s decision means that the number of Hungaricums has now risen to fifteen. Herend porcelain, which is one of Hungary’s acknowledged symbols which it is a value and a privilege to own, as well as pálinka and grape marc pálinka, which are already regarded as the nation’s unique specialities, are from today officially Hungaricums - announced Minister for Rural Development Sándor Fazekas following the meeting of the Hungaricum Committee in Herend. The Minister stressed that Herend porcelain, pálinka and grape marc pálinka are the first Hungaricums to be included in the Hungaricum Collection on the basis of special adjudication. Pálinka is a national drink, a true Hungarian speciality; the way it is created, its production and unique Hungarian Holocaust Memorial Year 2014 In early 2013, the Government of Hungary set up a Memorial Committee in order to properly commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Holocaust, an important step towards facing our history. The Committee is to provide a forum through which representatives from civil society, ethnic groups, religious life, education, diplomacy and a range of public institutions can channel their ideas and proposals towards the preparation of the Hungarian Holocaust Memorial Year of 2014. The role of the Hungarian State is riot to steer the course of discussions within this body, but to bolster an inter-societal dialogue among various stakeholders interested in the same goal: commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust together in the interest of preventing anything similar from happening again. The legitimacy of the Committee follows also from the breadth of its membership: in addition to the largest Jewish communities, several Jewish cultural organisations, the Ambassadors of Israel, the United States, Germany and Austria, the Committee may also count several ministers and state secretaries, in addition to leaders of the Holocaust Documentation Centre and Memorial, the Hungarian Scientific Academy and the National Roma Self-Government (ORÖ) among its members. In order to express its commitment to the concept of remembrance, the Hungarian State is to join the group of countries that support the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation. Throughout the Memorial Year, numerous highlevel diplomatic exchanges will take place, directed programmes will tackle the issue of deported children and new initiatives will honour the memory of rescuers at schools by unveiling commemorative plaques. The Phorrajmos, the Roma Holocaust, will also gain equal acknowledgement through the dedication of a number of events and countrywide programmes to the memory of the Roma victims. The Government understands that besides direct funding, there needs to be a Funding Programme that provides civil society at large with opportunities to start up their own initiatives. Via international cooperation, a synagogue-renovation programme is to be initiated, travelling exhibitions will be on display at 120 diplomatic representations abroad, while within the framework of overhauling Hungarian Holocaust education, it is planned that no student will leave secondary education without having visited Auschwitz-Birkenau. HATOG Conference in San Francisco The” Hungarian Americans Together” (HATOG) conference took place on 2-3 March 2013, in San Mateo, California, bringing together 75 members of the Hungarian American community from the Sates of California, Georgia, Ohio, Washington, New York and Washington DC, representing 29 organizations, from six states, and Hungary. The conference was hosted by the Hungarian American Coalition of WDC, and the Honorary Consulate General of Hungary of San Francisco, the Hungarian Catholic Mission, c/o Woodside Priory and the Free Magyar Reformed Church of San Francisco and Vicinity. This was the 6th in a series of nationwide meetings to explore ways the community could establish best practices to preserve and “pass on” the Hungarian Heritage in the US, assisted by technology’s ability to reach nationwide audiences and facilitate networking among the 2nd and 3rd generations of Hungarians to insure that they stay connected. All Hungarian American organizations and private persons were invited to participate and introduce their activities. They were joined by special guests, like Agnes Fulemile, Director, Hungarian Cultural Center, NY, who briefed the audience on the upcoming Hungarian Heritage Month at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival, in Washington DC, between Jun 26 to July 4th, 2013. László Hamos, President of the Diaspora Council and the HHRF and several Board members of the HAC, represented by Max Teleki, Edit and Andrea Lauer, Ted Horvath, George Pogan were also present.
