AMERICAN ~. Hungarian Journal Former Congressman Ernie Könnyű Recommends In Statewide California Republican Races U.S. SENATOR - CARLY FIORINA - Carly is the HP C.E.O. who rose from office secretary to head what is now the World’s largest technology company. She doubled sales in her six years from $44 billion to $88 billion. Fiorina, a clear conservative, is endorsed by a slew of pro-life, pro-gun, pro-taxpayer and a pro-woman organizations as well the choice of Republican leaders like Governor Sarah Palin and the Republican Senatorial Election Committee. Carly is the clear choice over liberal tax-increaser, pro-choicer, pro-gay marriage law professor Tom Campbell (To tell you the truth, Tom, who is nick-named Boxer-Lite, should run as a Democrat or Libertarian). Conservative Chuck DeVore, endorsed by the Tea Party, lacks funds, organization and support to win. CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR - MEG WHITMAN - EMeg has the funding to fight Jerry Brown’s leftist policies and has the support of former governor Pete Wilson, former Vice President Dick Chaney and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. She, a billionaire, even committed to help defeat Barbara Boxer. I withdrew my endorsement of Steve Poizner over his dirty campaigning (by accusing EMeg of being pro-porno), his immoral and illegal denial to educate immigrant children (I was one once and I believe a mind is a terrible thing to waste), and Steve’s questioning of the Bush administration he worked for on the war in Iraq (an item on which he was harshly criticized by my former House colleague, Dick Chaney). LT. GOVERNOR - SAM AANESTAD - Long time conservative state Senator is endorsed by the California Republican Assembly. Sam is the choice of the “anybody but Lt. Governor Abel Maldonado” crowd. Abel became famous as a state Senator for supporting various tax increases including the increase to the 9.25% level sales tax adopted into law last year. (Don’t worry Abel! If you get the Republican nomination, an unlikely event, I’ll back you against that law braking likely Democrat opponent and ego-maniac, Mayor Gavin Newsome.) ATTORNEY GENERAL - JOHN EASTMAN - John, a staunch conservative is endorsed by the California Republican Assembly. He is a well known in law circles as a constitutional lawyer. His opponents are the able state senator John Harmer and the powerful Los Angeles District Attorney, Steve Cooley. SECRETARY OF STATE - DAMON DUNN - Damon, a well spoken African-American conservative, is endorsed by the California Republican Assembly. He was so successful in his speech at the state Republican convention that he received a standing ovation. He is a former NFL football player. STATE TREASURER - MIMI WALTERS - Former Assembly Member Mimi Walters is from Orange County and she is endorsed by the California Republican Assembly. SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTIONS - DIANE LENNING Diane is a Medal of Freedom winner in 2004, has a Masters degree, active in education reform, and is endorsed by the California Republican Assembly. ERNIE KÖNNYŰ - 408-369-1255 Hungarian Parliament chopped by 50% Hungary’s parliament is about to shed seats, according to political analysts who commented on last week’s FIDESZ party majority parliament’s approval to amend the constitution where the number of parliamentarians would be cropped by 50%. ‘If this proposal is implemented before the end of the incoming administration then it in itself may be unconstitutional as voters had gone the polls to vote for MPs in their respective constituencies,” one analyst said. But FIDESZ has always voiced that there are “far too many lawbringers than necessary”, costing the tax payer a fortune, not to mention the ongoing conflict of interests where MPs in the past had also been executive mayors and senior executives of companies, which secured lucrative government tenders. FIDESZ also wishes to cut back on unnecessary state bureaucracy and bring more effective and simple decision-making in the house. FIDESZ’s two-third majority of 263 seats in parliament was enough to help push 306 votes in favor of the new amendments. Proposals cal for a reduction from 386 seats to a mere 180-200 parliamentary mandates. But no decision has been finalized A remarkable 72% of Hungarians say that most people in their country are actually worse off today economically than they were under communism. Only 8% say most people in Hungary are better off, and 16% nor has there been any set date for the actual amendment. A special emphasis will also be given to include a dozen MPs to represent the minority groups of Hungary from 2014. The amended constitution would create a new position for deputyprime minister, initiated by the FIDESZ administration. The new government will be sworn in on May 29, 2010. say things are about the same. In no other Central or Eastern European country surveyed did so many believe that economic life is worse now than during the communist era. This is the result of almost universal displeasure with the economy. Fully 94% describe the country’s economy as bad, the highest level of economic discontent in the hard hit region of Central and Eastern Europe. Just 46% of Hungarians approve of their country’s switch from a state-controlled economy to a market economy; 42% disapprove of the move away from communism. The public is even more negative toward Hungary’s integration into Europe; 71% say their country has been weakened by the process. Please Support Our Advertisers! Bruce Feiler is a writer with diverse interests and an adventurous spirit. His best seller Walking the Bible, about his 10,000-mile trek through the Holy Lands, became a hit PBS series; he wrote a book about his year as a circus clown and one on Abraham - nine books total, but none like his latest, The Council of Dads. Bruce Feiler was a young father when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2008. He instantly worried what his death might mean for his daughters. “Would they wonder who I was? Would they wonder what I thought? Would they lack for my approval, my discipline, my voice?” Three days later he came up with a stirring idea of how he might give them that voice. He would reach out to six men, from all the passages in his life, and asked them to be present through the passages in his daughters’ lives. And he would call this group of men, “The Council of Dads.” “I believe my daughters will have plenty of opportunities in their lives,” he wrote to these men. “They’ll have loving families. They’ll have welcoming homes. They’ll have each other. But they may not have me. They may not have their dad. Will you help be their dad?” And thus was born the Council of Dads, the friends he hoped would teach the lessons, send the signals, say the things he would have when his daughters fail a test, win a prize, fall in love. Proposing membership, Feiler recalls, felt like proposing marriage. The conversations defy the image of awkward men allergic to sentiment. Cancer was “a passport to intimacy”; it drove him to tell his friends why they mattered, ask them to be more involved in his life and particularly in his daughters’. The Council of Dads is the inspiring story of what happened next. Mixing the harrowing tale of his treatment with the uplifting lessons of these men - “Approach the Cow,” “Pack Your Flip-Flops,” “Live the Questions,” “Harvest Miracles” - Feiler’s account is touching, funny, and ultimately a deeply moving account of parenthood, loss, and love. Feiler chose the “dads-to-be” from different passages of his life, with different life lessons they were supposed to teach his daughters. A man he grew up with, a camp counselor, a college roommate, a business partner, and two best friends, one practical, the other a romantic. One would teach the girls about travel (to follow in their dad’s footsteps), another about questions (never lose your curiosity, if you keep asking questions, you’ll never be lost), yet another about dreams (but what if your dreams run into a wall? Ignore it, get around it, above it, through it but never give in to it). Along the way he paints vivid portraits of his father, his two grandfathers, and various father figures in his life to explore the changing role of fatherhood in America. He mixes these with an intimate, highly personal chronicle of his “Lost Year” battling cancer and reconstructing his leg- an ordeal, like Jacob wrestling with an angel in the Book of Genesis, leaves him marked and transformed by the most profound questions of the human spirit. The Council of Dads is the work of a master storyteller confronting the most difficult experience of his life and emerging with a book of wisdom, comfort, and hope that will change the way parents relate to their children, their friends, and their own lives.
