Salute to Vienna January 3, 2010 - Walt Disney Concert Hall Entering its 15th season, the SALUTE TO VIENNA (STV) concert series has become a favorite holiday musical tradition throughout North America. The series combines the brilliant talents of The Strauss Symphony of America with stellar European maestros, tenors, sopranos and dancers to perform and celebrate the glorious, uplifting music of Vienna’s “Waltz King”, Johann Strauss Jr., and his contemporaries. STV is delightfully reminiscent of Vienna’s famous and beloved NEUJAHRSKONZERT, performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for over 70 years and televised annually to 1.3 billion people around the globe. Over the past decade STV has grown into the largest live concert series of its kind in North America, under the leadership of Attila and Marion Glatz, founders and producers of this unique project. In 1995, AGCP premiered STV in Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall. By 2004 the show was presented in 33 major concert halls over a 5 day period across the continent, including sold-out performances in • Los Angeles (the Walt Disney Concert Hall), Philadelphia (the Kimmel Center), Washington (the Kennedy Center), New York (the Lincoln Center), Boston (Symphony Hall), Montreal (Place des Arts), Vancouver (Orpheum, Theatre) and Calgary (Jack Singer Concert Hah). The 2010 concert will mark its fifth season with The Walt Disney Concert Hall. SALUTE TO VIENNA is the only genuine re-creation of the original Viennese production and is officially recognized by the Mayor of Vienna as an authentic Viennese New Year’s celebration. What Nutcracker means to Christmas, Salute to Vienna means to the New Year! Conductor: Imre Kollár One of Hungary’s most dynamic young conductors, Imre Kollár received his conducting diploma from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. He began his career as Assistant Conductor of the Hungarian State Opera (1991- 91), quickly moving into the position of Principal Conductor of the Dohnányi Symphony Youth Orchestra, assisting Maestro Ken- Ichiro Kobayashi at the Hungarian State Concert Orchestra. In 1993 he won first prize at the Treviso International Conductors Competition, and ih 1997 was a finalist in the Bonn International Conductors Competition. Since 1994 he has been the Music Director of the Debrecen Philharmonic Orchestra, and recently accepted a new appointment with the MÁV Symphony Orchestra. A wellknown interpreter of the works of Mozart and Bartók, he was invited to guest-conduct Die Zauberflöte in Brussels, and annually presents a seminar in Japan on the musical life and art of Bartók and Kodály. His several CDs include Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 with Hungarian pianist Gergely. Bogányi and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4. This season marks Maestro Kollár’s third appearance as a guest conductor with Salute to Vienna. Salute to Vienna has indeed become the World’s Greatest New Year’s Concert! Fourteen years ago Attila and Marion Glatz, founders and producers of Salute to Vienna, realized their dream of bringing the joy and beauty of Vienna’s Neujahrskonzert to North American audiences. Salute to Vienna, premiered at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall in 1995 and was an immediate success. Beginning with that first sold-out performance, Salute to Vienna has grown to become the largest simultaneously produced concert series in North America. This year Salute to Vienna audiences in 20 major North American cities will celebrate the New Year in traditional Viennese style!
