City, California, celebrated the swearing in of their new Pastor, Gabor Magyari-Kope, last Sunday, January 15, 2006. The solemn ceremony was officiated by Bishop Andor Demeter of Phoenix, Arizona and Esperes Sándor Szabó from Los Angeles. It was witnessed by many representatives of the Western Division of American- Hungarian Reformed Churches, who each transmitted their blessings and the best wishes of their congregation to the young minister. Reverend Magyary-Kope was chosen after a worldwide search by the church elders. He came from Kolozsvár but arrived directly from Sweden, where he has been administering to a Swedish and Finnish Hungarian congregation prior to arriving in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2004. The newly inducted pastor spoke eloquently and gave a very moving speech about his calling, the the task before him and the warm welcome, support and love he received from all the members of the church for the last two years, especially the chief Elder Karl Fovenyessi and Ilona Magyari. Reverend Magyari-Kope and his wife Dr. Blanka Magyari- Kope, a scientist at Stanford University, are expecting their first child in May. The joyous ceremony was concluded by a wonderful luncheon reception prepared by the women’s support group for an overflow group of church members and supporters. Susan Dobay’s Paintings in Florida Two American-Hungarian artists are showing their special selection of work at Wall Art Gallery, South 8th Street 122, Suite B, Fernandian Beach, Florida 32034. Opening reception February 2, 2006. Painter Susan Dobay’s work is well known and loved in California as well as in Hungary. This time she exhibits her Traveling Impressions: London, Paris, Toronto, San Francisco, Greece and Hungary are the subject of the paintings. Her ars poetica: “Although I derive inspiration from various sources - e.g., music, nature, the human condition - I try to find the balance between mind and spirit. My goal is to involve viewers in a creative game where both the mind and the heart are stimulated. The other artist is sculptor Armand Gilany. '56 Discussed at USC Dean 's Forum On Thursday, January 26 Dean Geoffrey Cowan held a forum of discussion on photography and social change with a focus on the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution. The meeting took place at the Annenberg School of Communication, with prominent personalities such as Nobel Laureate Professor George Olah and the “First Lady of Hungarian theater”, Éva Szörényi who chairs the “Remember Hungary 1956 Committee, talking about their personal experiences and helping the attending students imagine what it was really like. The event was organized by Dr. Bob Filep, former member of the USC Annenberg faculty. Sandwiches and drinks were offered to participants. The Dean, who headed VOA from 1994 to 1996, acted as a moderator. He discussed the role of the Voice of America and Radio Free Europe in preparing the ground for the revolution. Éva Szörényi recited the wonderful Tollas poem in Canada’s Watson Kirkconnell’s translation: “They Walled Up Every Window”. Murray Fromson, now a professor at USC, then reporting from the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, added interesting details about the bloody fight between the Hungarian and Russian water polo teams which ended in Hungary’s 4:0 victory. Consul General Ferenc Bösenbacher added interesting data about the number of Hungarians in the U.S. and California in particular. The Dean and another member of the faculty talked more about the secret radio transmissions, the jamming and whether the West had given Hungarians the impression that if they revolted, help would be on the way. Other eyewitnesses related their memories of 1956: George Poliak, whose son Tommy is the head of the Annenberg Foundation, and Brownie leader Attila Tóth. The photography of Erich Lessing was exhibited and discussed. In closing comments, Prof. Olah stated that the Revolution of 1956 started the disintegration of Communism.
