AMERICAN English page Hungarian Journal I received this call to action from a professor of the University of Szeged, and I urge you all to join this noble effort EVA SZÖRÉNYI News of the Hungarian American Coalition Victims of Communism Memorial Fund Meets Fundraising Goal The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation announced on July 19 that it reached its fund-raising goal of $825,000 and expects to begin construction on its Memorial to the more than 100 million victims of communism this September. “This is an all-important milestone in the history of the Foundation,” said VOCMF Foundation Chairman Lee Edwards, “made possible by the'generous support of an extraordinary coalition of patriotic individuals and ethnic communities, foundations and corporations, foreign governments and even political parties. Our memorial is truly an international memorial.” Hungarian American Coalition President, Maximilian Teleki said, “HAC and our members were very proud to participate in the VOCMF along with many other organizations and individuals over the past several years. We are delighted to see the VOCMF’s hard work pay off. We salute everyone who made this possible, especially Dr. Lee Edwards.” The Foundation has applied to the National Park Service for a construction permit and expects to receive permission to proceed with ground-breaking in September. Dedication of the Memorial is scheduled for June 2007, the 20th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan’s historic Brandenburg Gate speech when he said, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” “Washington is a city of memorials and monuments to great events and great leaders,” said Edwards. “How fitting that our Memorial with its bronze replica of the Goddess of Democracy erected in Tiananmen Square in 1989 will be located on Capitol Hill within view of the-U.S. Capitol.” The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, a non-profit organization, was established by an Act of Congress to build a memorial in Washington, DC to commemorate the more than 100 million victims of communism; to honor those who successfully resisted communist tyranny; to educate current and future generations about communism’s crimes against humanity; and to pay tribute to those who helped win the Cold War. Its national and international advisory councils include prominent members such as Jeane Kirkpatrick, Bob Dole, Claiborne Pell, Mrs. Lane Kirkland, Vaclav Havel, Lech Walesa, Elena Bonner and Vytautas Landsbergis. The Foundation’s Honorary Chairman is President George W. Bush. However, by Tuesday morning almost no signs were left of the extraordinary'rainstorms. Public maintenance workers had to clear away 70 tons of silt, while the Budapest fire services were called out to 92 locations, due to torn-down trees, cables and flooded basements. In addition, Déli Pályaudvar was closed for one hour due to a huge lake that had formed in the underpass. Other areas flooded included Buda’s shopping malls, Mammut and MÓM Park. Call TO REMEMBER HUNGARY 1956 MEMORIAL FLAME The University of Debrecen and the City of Debrecen, prompted by the historic act of its students and citizens, who were the first to march in the street with their demands in Hungary 50 years ago, will ignite the memorial flame at 11 a.m., October 23, 2006, as an homage to the 1956 Hungarian revolution and war of independence. This is a call to our international partner institutions and sister cities as well as interested communities and educational institutions all over the world to join us in paying homage: let the flame of remembrance be kindled at as many points of the world as possible, at 11 a.m., October 23rd , local time, and let it burn until November 4, when the adverse winds of history blew the flame of revolution out. Let the memorial flame leap across Hungary and around the Earth, with the passing of the Sun. Let this be a universal salute to the heroism and martyrdom of a revolution forsaken and crushed; and to a revolution and war of independence, whose light was brutally extinguished by totalitarian tyranny, yet, the process it started has been shaping our life up to this day and changed the course of world history. THE CITY OF DEBRECEN THE UNIVERSITY OF DEBRECEN 'Political Lies' Campaign Starts Augusztus 4,2006 (The Budapest Sun) July 27, 2006 BUDAPEST - The governing Socialist MSzP Party, and especially Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, experienced harsh criticism from a foreign newspaper and Hungary’s main opposition party Fidesz last week. Germany’s conservative Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) said on Wednesday (July 19) that Gyurcsány has been concentrating his power to an extent that is unprecedented since the regime change in 1990, with power gradually shifting from ministries to the hands of the Prime Minister himself. The author of the article claimed that the head of the new public administration bodies were all the faithful followers of Gyurcsány, portfolio.hu reported. In addition, the paper called Economy Minister János Kóka the “twin brother” of Gyurcsány, as they “both became really wealthy very swiftly and very young.” FAZ also claimed that the concentration of power can be seen mainly through the fact that apparently no one would confront the Prime Minister. Also, no one would try to cross Gyurcsány, even if he demanded to become the Socialist Party’s President, simply because, since 1990, he is the first Premier who has managed reelection for a second term. Main opposition party Fidesz, on the other hand, launched an attack on the government by issuing a manifesto against “openly told political lies and untrue preelection statements,” state news agency MTI reported. Fidesz chairman Viktor Orbán said during a speech in Romania last weekend, “One cannot base governing on political lies, as that undermines the future of the nation, harms the economy and destroys democratic foundations.” Orbán added that the governing parties (the MSzP and the Free Democrat SzDSz) not only misled voters with false claims, but caused considerable damage to Hungary, as investors have lost confidence. He also criticized the government’s policy on ethnic Hungarians, saying it had abolished the main institutions of such policy. In his speech, Orbán urged the cabinet to openly support the autonomy aspirations of ethnic Hungarians in neighboring countries. Explaining the causes of his party’s election defeat, he noted that Fidesz was not strong enough to make voters see the real state of the Hungarian economy, while the cabinet successfully concealed the grave situation. Fidesz spokesperson Péter Szíjjártó last week announced a rally on Heroes’ Square on Sep 23, and has asked people to sign a petition as part of a campaign. Orbán announced that his party is planning to establish a shadow cabinet, so that the opposition can present an alternative; the austerity measures of the MSzP are, he said, damaging the popularity of the Socialists and the Prime Minister. Socialist deputy caucus leader Attila Mesterházy observed that Orbán’s speech showed that power is more important to him than Hungary. Gyurcsány, on the other hand, explained, “During the campaign I was talking about three things: the historic expansions in detail, the reforms and the corrections. “I did not lie, but I did not unravel every detail of the truth. According to common sense, truth in this case would have been a political lie. “So the risk was not to convey the message to the people, that is historically, socially and morally the most important - that this country needs to be reformed.” * Prime Minister Says No to Land Gift Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány has rejected Greenpeace’s offer of a one-square meter plot of land on the site of a planned gold mine in northwest Romania, saying he had to refuse the gift, but that his and Greenpeace’s aims in this matter are almost identical. Action, he promised, would be taken by the Hungarian government if it was determined that the mining project posed an “environmental hazard.” Greenpeace offered the plot of land to the PM to highlight the damage it believes the mine will cause. In a letter to Greenpeace, the PM said he too hoped to prevent environmental damage, such as that seen in the Baia Mare incident in 2000 were cyanide leaked into rivers, adding that experts are currently conducting an impact study on the Rosia Montana project, the results of which are to be discussed before a Hungarian-Romanian committee.
