Liam Neeson, Bill Condon, Annette Bening, István Szabó, Christopher Walken, Irma P. Hall, Marc Forster, Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks and Maggie Daley all joined the celebration CHICAGO - From critically acclaimed features to star-studded events, the Chicago International Film Festival, the oldest competitive film festival in North America, celebrated its 40th Anniversary in spectacular style. From local directors to internationally renowned filmmakers, the 40Ih Anniversary delivered the finest in world cinema, Oct. 7-21, 2004, with 109 feature films and 54 short films from 44 countries. Presented by Bank One, the 2004 program featured more films, new venues, and bigger panel discussions. In addition to its regular slate of groundbreaking current films, this year’s Festival also celebrated its history by bringing back to Chicago some of the most popular directors honored during the past four decades. “Unlike many other film festivals, we take pride in welcoming members of the public to our screenings and events,” said Chicago International Film Festival director, Michael Kutza. “We have been delighted by the tremendous response from film fans of all ages, especially in this special anniversary year.” The 2004 Audience Choice Award winner, determined by film lovers attending the Festival, was Christophe Barratier’s first-time feature LES CHORISTES (France), the story of an unemployed music teacher who takes a position at a tough boy’s reformatory in small-town 1949 France. The film, which will open in select U.S. markets on January 14, 2005, has also been submitted to the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences as France’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film. The Festival’s Audience Choice Award is sponsored by Motorola. The Main Jury awarded the Festival’s highest honor, the Gold Hugo, to KONTROLL (Hungary), Nimród Antal’s stunning debut, which has become one of Europe’s biggest commercial and critical hits. A hallucinatory, noirish thriller, KONTROLL was acclaimed by the jury for “the vitality and flair with which it expresses the feelings of a disillusioned generation.” Actor Liam Neeson kicked off the 2004 Festival as he joined Academy Award-winning director Bill Condon at the Chicago Theatre, Oct. 7 for a special screening of their highly anticipated new film KINSEY. To the delight of Chicago film fans, the Festival’s opening weekend also saw special appearances by actor Annette Bening and director István Szabó (BEING JULIA), actor Hank Azaria (HUFF), and actor Christopher Walken and local director Jordan Roberts (AROUND THE BEND). On Oct. 16 the Festival presented a “Homecoming MichaelKutza and AnnetteBening with the prize (Photo: Bob Dowey) Celebration,” honoring Chicago’s own Irma P. Hall, Harry J. Lennix and Robert Townsend, which also marked the eighth year that Black Perspectives has saluted African-American filmmakers. The Festival’s mid-point was marked with a special Centerpiece screening of FINDING NEVERLAND, starring Johnny Depp as James M. Barrie, the author of the beloved children’s story Peter Pan. Following the screening, director Marc Forster answered audience questions and talked about the making of his latest film. FINDING NEVERLAND was also a Festival audience pick for the top ten films of 2004 along with: MOOLAADE (Senegal), OUTING RILEY (USA), BORICUA (USA), THE SYRIAN BRIDE (Israel/France/Germany), DEAR FRANKIE (UK/ Scotland), TURTLES CAN FLY (Iraq/Iran), RULE #1 (Denmark), BATTLEGROUND: 21 DAYS ON THE EMPIRE’S 'EDGE (USA) and BORN INTO BROTHELS (USA). For the Grand Finale on Oct. 21, the Film Festival awarded a Career Achievement Golden Hugo director Robert Zemeckis before a special screening of THE POLAR EXPRESS. The evening was hosted by America’s most beloved actor, Tom Hanks, who plays multiple roles in this animated film based on the enchanting children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg. Celebrity guests who walked the red carpet at the Cadillac Palace Theatre included Irma P. Hall and Chicago’s First Lady Maggie Daley. The International Competition main jury featured Locarno Internationa! Film Festival director Irene Bignardi (Italy), producer and film director Izza Genini (Morocco/France), script consultant Gabriella Prekop (Hungary), filmmaker Arturo Ripstein (Mexico), actress Alexandra Stewart (France) and film critic and author John Russell Taylor (UK). No Clue I found this among the readers’ comments in Saturday’s L.A. Times and I felt compelled to share it with our readers. The comment was made regarding an earlier article oh pop artist Eminem, who seems to think America is becoming a police state. - The Editor. “I can only say this for Eminem and other talented individuals who claim that America is a police state, etc. The fact that they are even allowed to openly make such claims on the ariwaves and then sell their recordings on an open market proves that this is not the case. If Eminem, et al., *Were truly on the money, they would be in a forced labor camp, a mental reconditioning center, or just plain dead. They strike me as spoiled children who have no clue just how good they have it and how bad things could really be. So go ahead: talk big, attract attention and make your money. But don’t forget to count your blessings and honor the land you’re standing on. You wouldn’t be allowed to do what you’re doing so easily anywhere else:” I would like to correct a little oversight. In our October 22 issue, on Pg. 12, we forgot to mention that the excellent drawings - the one of the Soviet tank against the little boy playing soldier, and the one of “The Kid from Pest” are the work of Lajos Szalay. Let’s give him credit for the wonderful job he did immortalizing the heros of the Revolution of 1956. - The Editor.
