IT HAS HAPPENED quite often that an American playwright had to go abroad to have his or her opening of a daring new drama... This was the case with Edward Albee’s “Zoo Story,” and it has happened again, a few years ago, with New Yorker Gerty Agoston’s monologue-drama MY KILLER MY KID. First performed with Elizabeth de Charay, with great success, at the Kisvarda Drama Festival in Hungary, in 1995 and, again, at the Eger Play Festival in Hungary, in 2002, MY KILLER MY KID has finally arrived in New York. It has been performed at the prestigious THEATRE STUDO INC. near Times Square on October 30, 2004 and, again, October 31. Once again, Elizabeth de Charay (born in Budapest, like playwright Gerty Ágoston) created the extremely difficult and demanding tragic role of “Ilona,” a desperate mother, who finds it impossible to cope with the fact that her beloved tenyear-old son, Robby, has become a cruel monster, a killer. His victim was four-year-old Paul, and he, Robby, was Paul’s babysitter! The monologue-drama unfolds in an almost unbearably fast pace as Ilona stands in front of her imaginary jury and the judge, telling them her horrible story. In the end, she will ask: who has been guiltier? She, Ilona, who spoiled her little cherubic son rotten, after her husband died in a plane crash... or the psychiatrists with their idiotic leniency? Or Robby, definitely born with vicious instincts, but there is the question: could she, Ilona, have given him a stricter upbringing and not more, but less freedom? All these questions have been asked around the globe ever since children first killed children - in our modern times - in Liverpool, England, and later, there were the vicious copycats, and so much was blamed on the weapons instead of the murderers! Elizabeth de Charay, a very beautiful actress, renders a truly passionate and wildly emotional, but always convincing performance; at times fervently hoping that this - the discovery of the little corpse and, above all, the murderer - should be nothing but a nightmare, a shocking dream. But it is no dream and, in the end, her feeling of shame, remorse and her conscience will drive her to finish the drama, to seek the only way out of this Greek-type tragedy left for the mother of an enchantingly handsome - little monster. And when Ilona (Elizabeth) sings her little Hungarian lullaby, cradling the imaginary corpse of her own child, many in the audience could not help crying. There was sincere and long-lasting applause for the actress and for the author. “My Killer My Kid” will be the opening play of another Hungarian Festival, this time, in December and in Budapest, Hungary’s capital; again, with Elizabeth de Charay as the drama’s star. We here in New York would hope that the magnificent actress will create the same role on American television; the play and the actress deserve it! By the way, “My Killer My Kid” belong to author Gerty Agoston’s trilogy entitled “Satan and Saint”. A “bravo” to the Theatre Studio, Inc., Elizabeth de Charay, and the author of the play. E.G. Szabó Bush Wins, Kerry Concedes Graciously In sharp contrast to the vicious attacks of the last weeks of the election campaign, the American way of life prevailed as soon as the results became obvious. John Kerry did not want a repeat of the last election’s long drawn-out squabble about every single vote, recounts etc. Wednesday morning he telephoned the president and congratulated him on his victory. He certainly behaved as a gentleman, like the “New England patrician” he is considered to be. Of course, there was no problem with his social graces - it was his millionaire wife Teresa who shocked the nation with several instances of rather vulgar behavior and language. She sure would have made a very strange first lady. “I would not give up this fight if there was a chance that we would prevail - Kerry said in his concession speech. But it is now clear that even when all the provisional ballots are counted, which they will be, there won’t be enough outstanding votes for us to be able to win Ohio. And therefore, we can not win this election.” Kerry graciously accepted defeat, pointing out in his concession speech that “in an American election, there are no losers, because whether or not our candidates are successful, the next morning we all wake up as Americans. And that is the greatest privilege and the most remarkable good fortune that can come to us on earth.” President Eager to Spend His New ‘Political Capital’ WASHINGTON — Declaring that this year’s election had armed him with fresh “political capital,” President Bush said Thursday he would use that asset to try to fundamentally change Social Security and alter the federal tax code. Exuding confidence at his first news conference after his victory in the election, Bush said he hoped to work with Democrats in pursuing his agenda. But he left little doubt that if need be, he would press ahead without them. “I earned capital in the campaign — political capital — and now I intend to spend it,” he said. The agenda, he said, included “Social Security and tax reform, moving this economy forward, education, fighting and winning the war on terror.” The president clearly was buoyed by his solid win over Sen. John F. Kerry in the nation’s popular vote. Unofficial returns showed the president with slightly more than 59 million votes (about 52%) to Kerry’s 55.4 million (about 48%). That made Bush the first presidential candidate since his father in 1988 to capture more than 50% of the vote. And it contrasted with the 2000 election, when Bush eked out an electoral-vote win despite losing the popular vote. Bush’s apparent eagerness to aggressively push his major initiatives also reflected an awareness among senior White House officials that most second-term presidents enjoyed a small window of opportunity in which to enact their priorities before another election season got underway and the incumbent was hindered by lame-duck status. Changes will most certainly occur in the Cabinet. Speculation has been rife in Washington that U.S. Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft would be among the first senior officials to leave their posts during Bush’s second term — a departure that would create a high-profile opening for the president to fill.
