Was his ministry focused on alleviating human suffering? Or was it aimed at reconcilation with God? Did he urge those who followed him to withdraw from the world or to be involved in the world? Labeling is defin­ing. Defining involves prescrib­ing limits and setting boun­daries in order to identify what something is while also stating what it is not. Labeling Jesus is an attempt to define him. Dis­cerning who he was also in­cludes discovering who he was not. Jesus asked his disciples who they believed him to be. They defined him as the Messiah, the Son of the living God. St. Paul defined Jesus as crucified, when he made him known to the Corinthians. Yet he told the Philippians that knowing Jesus and the power of his resurrection was the definition he valued most. Nevertheless, prescribing limits and setting boundaries by which he is to be indentified can easily run the risk of misrepresenting him. For Jesus was not a liberal. Neither was he a conservative. He labeled himself with his own definitions, for example: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” What would it be like today if his followers were to commit themselves with sin­gular devotion to discerning what he meant by their defini­tion? To know him and to fol­low him would mean to find the road to God, to understand more and more of the truth of God, and to have more and more of the life of God. Jesus said: "If you continue in my word, you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." There is a sense in which we seek freedom through the rejection of claims upon us. We define freedom as the ability "to do our own thing." Jesus suggested that we are to live in the world responsive to the needs of others. Failure to do justice and compassion, mercy and righteousness is a denial of who we are as children of God. Perhaps no sentence in the Gospel can bet­ter suggest what dignity and responsibility reside in being truly Christian than Matth. 5:14. For in one instance Jesus said: "I am the light of the world." But in Matth. 5:14 he lifts his followers up to the same level with himself by tell­ing them: Ye are the light of the world." Translation by Adam Makkai (from the Legend of the Miracle Stag) Iraq Giving Its Own Forces Western Uniforms in Ploy WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has ordered uniforms replicating those worn by U.S. and British troops and will issue them to paramilitary fighters who would attack Iraqi civilians and blame it on Western forces, the U.S. Central Com­mand charged on Thursday. A command spokesman said in a statement that U.S. intelligence had obtained the information, but refused to say how such intelligence was gathered. The accusation was another in a series of allegations that have been made by Washington in a war of words with Saddam as ten­sion grows ahead of a possible U.S.-led invasion of Iraq to rid that country of alleged chemical and biological weapons. “Iraqi Presi­dent Saddam Hussein has ordered the procurement of military uni­forms identical down to the last detail to those of the United States and United Kingdom forces” now gathered in the Gulf, said James Wilkinson, a senior spokesman for Central Command. “Saddam intends to issue these uniforms to ‘Fedayeen Saddam’ troops who would wear them when conducting reprisals against the Iraqi people so that they could pass the atrocities off as the work of the United States and the United Kingdom.” A “fact sheet” provided by Central Command, which is head­quartered in Tampa, Florida, and has responsibility for any war in Iraq, said that Fedayeen Saddam, or “Men of Sacrifice,” has a strength of more than 15,000 and was founded by Saddam’s son, Uday, in 1994. Many members of the organization are in their teens and recruited in areas noted for loyalty to Iraq’s president, accord­ing to Central Command. “Though not an elite force, the group does deal with unrest during an emergency,” it added. “The force carries out patrols and anti-smuggling duties and is separate from the army command, re­porting directly to the presidential palace.” The American Hungarian Journal is 14 years old!
