AMERICAN Hungarian Journaí ^ HAPPY THANKSGIVING! | MEDITATIONS by Dr. Bela Bonis Pastor (562) 430-0876 First Hungarian Reformed Churóh, Hawthorne ONE GREAT QUESTION was uppermost in the mind of John Calvin during the Protestant Reformation öf the 16th century. He spent nearly all of his life trying to answer it. The question was, “How can and how should a Christian live in this kind of world?” Early in his life, he came to the conclusion that his answer ultimately depended upon his view of God. Our 21st century is also a time when our idea of what God is like can be our most valuable possession. Two significant trends mark our age, one in the inner life of man, the other in the outer space of the world. The great revolutionary surge of our century flows from the restless spirit within man and it may not end until it has charged the face of the world. Man’s ventures into outer space too have opened up vistas and possibilities never known before, and he has unparalleled power in his hands. His goals for the aspirations of his restless spirit and the control of his vast powers will depend upon what he thinks of God. Indeed, men are once again asking questions about God due to their increased understanding of and power in the physical world. Yet, the new knowledge man now has of the world may lead some to think we no longer need God at all. Many laymen gape with a new sort of awe at the wondrous mechanics of nature. Our Reformed belief, however, has always emphasized the greatness of God in His sovereign rule over all things. To speak of God as sovereign is to say that His will is supreme in every sphere of life, action, and thought. Calvin thought of God in terms of personal will or activity, He is the power behind all there is in the universe. He has acted in the past, is acting now, and will act in the future for the achievement of His purpose, or as Calvin put it, for His own glory. God is sovereign in creation, in control of the world, but also in redemption. Just study this view, please, as given in Isaiah 51-53. Israel, His people in captivity had known all the feelings of insecurity, homesickness, loneliness, doubt, fears, anxieties, hopes and longings of a people who had been driven from a homeland they fervently loved. In Ps. 137 you will find a vivid description. But Jesus Christ is the instrument of God’s saving presence and purpose for His people. He unites in His person and works all prayers and hopes of God’s servants in Israel, and God is our Redeemer in this whole wide world, too. DÖMÖTÖR - Continued from Page 7. again. He, on his own initiative and efforts, built a magnificent 107-bed nursing home to care for these beloved elderly men and women. One example of his humanitarian work with the Hungarian community was his work with Ilona Palasics, a health aid for the Cleveland Health Department. Together, they embarked on the mission of giving aid to destitute or helpless Hungarians stranded in the old Buckeye neighborhood. Rev. Dömötör was always ready to provide space at the nursing home for any Hungarian who needed it, regardless of their finances or religious beliefs. Through his good works and exemplary service to God, he was promoted within the Free Hungarian Reformed Church to the esteemed position of Bishop. As bishop, he organized churches in Arizona, California, Canada, Australia, Africa, and various other parts of the world. In 33 years, Bishop Dömötör had been the featured guest speaker over 500 times and had served as a guest preacher over 300 times at various churches. Nonetheless, his enthusiasm was certainly not limited to religious work alone. He combined his religious service with various other civic activities and responsibilities. He was the president of the American Hungarian Association for 5 terms. He was the author and publisher of a weekly Hungarian newspaper and a weekly commentator on the radio. He established a sculptural garden for the Hungarian Martyrs and historic heroes. Furthermore, he was a prolific writer, as well as a respected poet. His published books cover religipus subjects as well as the history of the Free Hungarian Reformed Church. Bishop Dömötör’s service to God and humanity has been recognized by a number of organizations, including the Ellis Island Committee, the Hungarian Association and the Árpád Academy. The United States government honored his efforts by placing a statue of Louis Kossuth in the Capitol Building. In addition, the African Christian University of Zaire bestowed an honorary doctoral degree upon him with a conferred status of Doctor of Divinity. Bishop Dömötör worked tirelessly day and night, never seeming to relax, as if driven by a divine mission. “Laughter and Tears” at the Hungarian Theatre’s Gala Performance: Karoly Sziki’s triumph As Cardinal Mindszenty Elizabeth de Charay and her “Hungarian Theatre and Arts” had invited the celebrated actor and director of one of Hungary’s avantgarde-stages, the HARLEKIN THEATRE of Eger, to impersonate persecuted by the nazis as well as by the Hungarian communists. Sziki, one of Hungary’s leading character actors whom I would like to call the “Hungarian Richard Burton”, did not come alone: he brought with him a life size puppet, complete with a fantastically convincing mask, depicting the tragic figure of Imre Nagy, who was Hungary’s premier at the time of the heroic 1956. In 1957, when the red hordes returned after having promised to vacate Hungary, Imre Nagy - who had subscribed to a more humane and definitely pro- Hungarian form of socialism - was executed after a mock trial. The concept of László Varga’s short drama, “Before the Last Judgement”, with Mindszenty as the sole actor, could not be timelier today, in 2002... All you have to do is substitute the red hordes with today’s terrorists, out to destroy all culture and civilization, and to conquer the world! ...Sziki, in the robes of the Cardinal, with a rosary and cross, keeps talking to the puppet (Imre Nagy) in this imaginary encounter, for Nagy never met the Prince of the Church. Mindszenty died in exile, in Vienna, in the Seventies... Karoly Sziki, soft spoken, quiet and strong, convincing and persuasive, proves in this provocative, in its essence, religious play that the holy cross will always be stronger than the most perfidious of all modem weapons and intellectual poisons. Small, wonder that the Hungarian Republic has recently awarded Karoly Sziki its highest artistic award, the “Golden Cross of Merit”. This was a gem of a performance in a difficult play! Bravissimo, Sziki! Having shed (perhaps symbolic) tears in Part One, it was time for laughter and first class amusement in Part Two of this lavish, multi-faced program. The same author, László Varga, surprised us with a musical comedy, entitled “After 30 years have passed...” and here we met Karoly Sziki in the role of an irresistible seducer (Tibor) who is completely unattached now... As is Eva, his former girl friend... They meet at Eva’s place, after a separation of 30 (!!!) years. It is a bit difficult to understand that, having kissed and embraced the smashingly pretty and elegant Eva (Elizabeth de Charray)... all of a sudden Tibor decides he does not want to continue where they broke off, 30 years ago... He abruptly leaves, but only to meet Eva, once again, at Budapest’s famous Gundel Restaurant where they celebrate their well deserved Happy End with the help of an outstanding Gypsy Primas (István Lakatos) and his companion... There is laughter and happiness and dancing and singing and the audience pitches in, so it all ends in typical Hungarian “mulatság” (celebration). Let me state, once again, that beautiful Elizabeth has the qualities and the glittering personality of Broadway’s most celebrated leading ladies! There were other highlights in this great program, too: Beautiful and talented Gabriella Lendvay sang Puccini arias, the highly amusing Mimi Mautner, Katalin Pota and witty young Szilvia Kovács brought the house down with some adorable sketches, and Szilvia Balazs gave a poetic, convincing rendition. The whole after: noon was another proof of Elizabeth de Charay’s never ending quest for “real Art and Entertainment”, not only for Hungarian- Americans, but for us all, here in Manhattan, at affordable prices! Go on, please... forever! GERTYÁGOSTON Actor JAMES COBURN Dies at 74 BEVERLY HILLS, California - Actor James Cobum, who took on the role of the tough guy in such films as “Our Man Flint” and “The Magnificent Seven,” finally earning an Oscar with his role in “Affliction,” died of a heart attack at the age of 74, in his home, while listening to music with his wife. Cobum won the Academy Award in 1998 for best supporting actor in “Affliction.” Most recently, he appeared in the film “The Man From Elysian Fields” in which a Hungarian, our own popular entertainer Elise Gallay played the roie of his housekeeper. Bom in Laurel, Nebraska, on August 31, 1928, Cobum studied acting in Los Angeles and with Stella Adler in New York. He caught the public’s attention in 1960, when he played knife-throwing Britt in the epic Western “The Magnificent Seven.” Although he had few lines compared with his other macho co-stars Yul Brinner, Eli Wallach and Steve McQueen, Cobum’s mere screen presence grabbed the public’s attention - observed film historian Leonard Maltin.. the goulash pot #1 Magyar Restaurant Nevadában Kedvesen fogadjuk önöket az elegáns kis étteremben finom ebédre vagy vacsorára.
