AMERICAN Hungarian Journal MEDITATIONS by Dr. Bela Bonis Socialists Make Major Gains in Hungarian Elections Pastor (562) 430-0876 First Hungarian Reformed Church, Hawthorne November 1 is observed by countless Christians as All Saints Day. Honoring the saints has been a feature of Christian worship from the origins of the church, when names of the local martyrs were included in the Sunday eucharistic prayer. As early as the 4th century, days were set aside to commemorate all the saints at once. This was done to honor unknown saints and to remedy deficiencies in people’s observance of a particular saint’s day. The most enduring of these commemorations in the Catholic Church falls on Nov. 1. All Saints Day is now celebrated on or near this date by many Protestants, too. They do not canonize or pray to saints, but they look to these towering figures of our heritage for inspiration and encouragement in our own pilgrimage. Some churches use All Saints Day as an opportunity to learn more about these great saints. Others focus broadly on the "great cloud of witnesses” living and dead, whose seemingly humdrum lives glow with everyday virtues. Still others observe the day as memorial for members of the family who died during the year or back in the past. All these emphases are in the spirit of the day, but one should still minimize the parochialism and sentimentality that can result if a community focuses exclusively on local loved ones. All Saints Day should challenge us by presenting us with a variety of figures from different times and places whose often contradictory styles of faithfulness enlarge our notion of what it means to be a disciple and a saint. A saint, in fact, is one who reflects the sanctity of the God he or she serves: to be a saint in this sense is a sign not of perfection, but of fidelity. I like the idea of the great and heroic ones who were called to do great things for God. I like thinking of the saints beyond, not simply resting, but waiting for us to join them: they assure us of a future. It is the immortality of the community of faith - not of the individual believer - that is to be celebrated and to remain as a living witness to God. That "great cloud of witnesses" is rooting for us now. And please note this, too. Your spiritual giants and mine all have this in common: none of them ever claimed to be a saint. They did not bless our lives because they wanted to be saints, but because they loved God, and were moved to share God’s love. BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) - Hungary’s Socialist-led government scored major gains in municipal elections Sunday, improving on its showing in April’s parliamentary elections. Preliminary results gave the Socialist Party and its liberal ally, the’ Alliance of Free Democrats, 48 percent of the vote for the Budapest and county assemblies, while the conservative opposition parties gained 33 percent. In April’s parliamentary elections, the Socialists and Free Democrats scraped together a majority of only 10 seats in the 386- seat national assembly. Around 51 percent of Hungary’s 8.1 million voters turned out for the poll, up from 46 percent in the 1998 municipal vote but down from a turnout of 73 percent in April’s elections. On Sunday, the government coalition won mayoral posts in 16 of the country’s 22 biggest cities. With recounts pending in a few districts, government candidates were expected to win at least 17 of Budapest’s 23 districts. “Voters have said a decisive ‘yes’ to the first four months of this government,” said Socialist Party leader László Kovács, who is also Hungary’s foreign minister. Janos Ader, chairman of the Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Party, the largest opposition party, conceded defeat. “The Socialists have won these elections, and I wish all the new mayors success in their work,” Ader said. In Budapest, the Free Democrats’ Gabor Demszky handily retained the mayorship he has held since Hungary’s transition to democracy in 1990. He gained 47 percent of the vote compared with former Olympic champion Pal Schmitt’s 36 percent. Schmitt ran as an independent with the backing of the opposition parties. Socialist candidate Erzsébet Gy. Nemeth was third with 13 percent. Demszky began his victory speech with a shout of “Long live the Irish!” He was referring to the result of the Sunday’s referendum in Ireland, which backed enlargement of the European Union to include Hungary and nine other countries. Gas Used to Subdue Terrorists Said to be Opium Relative (AP) The mysterious gas Russian forces pumped into a theater to end a hostage crisis was an opiate — a chemical related to morphine, Pentagon officials said Monday. The Bush administration, meanwhile, refused to criticize Russian special forces for using the gas, which killed 116 of the hostages as well as the hostage takers.- The president abhors the loss of life, but he understands that it is the terrorists who are responsible for the tragedy, Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer said as the president traveled to New Mexico. Military officials said the U.S. embassy in Moscow had determined that the gas used by the Russians was some sort of opium derivative. Such substances not only kill pain and dull the senses but also can cause coma and death by shutting down breathing and circulation. Russian authorities have refused to name the substance used, even keeping that information from doctors treating the rescued hostages. Asked directly about the use of the gas, Fleischer wouldn’t say whether the administration believed it was appropriate. “We don’t know what all the facts are,” he said. “But, as that information is developed, the president feels very strongly that the people who caused this are the terrorists.” Bush had not spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin as of Sunday evening, Fleischer said.
