AMERICAN Hungarian Journaf DREAMS COME TRUE - Interview with Ildy Lee Rosen I am sitting in the majestic living room of Ildy Lee Rosen’s Palos Verdes dream palace. Through the tall, arched windows overlooking the Pacific, everything seems to reflect different shades of blue. Directly in front of us is Portugal Bend; a little farther away, Catalina, and even St. Nicholas Island. As in the song, "On a clear day, you can see forever". Today is a clear day. Around the turquoise-tinted waters of the swimming pool, the palm trees are waving their giant fans in the seabreeze. The lady of the house walks in, young and beautiful, sportsy in her simple black pants and top. Her long, blond hair that she usually wears down to her shoulders, is now pulled together in a ponytail. Even if I didn’t know she was raised in Paris, I could guess from the way she walks and talks, the way she smiles, and that certain "je-nesais-quoi" that enchants everyone on first sight.- Ildy, I heard that you had three great dreams in your life, and you realized all three of them. What were they, and how did you do it?- I was born in Hungary and spent part of my childhood there. No matter how hopeless our family’s situation was during the communist regime, I was holding on to my cherished dreams: I wanted to study at the Sorbonne in Paris, I wanted to become an international star, and I promised myself to live in Hollywood someday, in a white palace with palm trees swaying in the wind, and a swimming pool. Most people do not dare to dream. It takes a really lucky person to go beyond dreaming and determine the goal, and the road that will take you there. Luck is ' an important factor, but you also have to grab the opportunities life brings, otherwise you will remain a dreamer forever. "The real show is life itself' Ildy Lee did not get stuck at the dreaming stage. Not only did she learn the painstaking process of setting a goal and following it through, but she is also teaching her method in California. She enlivens the classes with songs of her own, which she writes in three languages.- This is the only life we have! - she continues. - There is no dress rehearsal, no repeat performance. This is it, our only chance!- Tell me about the "French ConnectionHow did you get to realize your first dream?- My father was French - an international lawyer who spoke eight languages fluently - so after the revolution of 1956 we settled in France. Becoming a lawyer was a tradition in our family, so both my brother Tibor and I studied law in Paris.- How did you change direction to become the star that we know today?- It was a birthday gift that changed my life forever. My father gave me a guitar, and I could not take my hands off it. I had already studied piano and singing, so I said goodbye to the legal studies. I won a TV vocal competition, and the biggest name in the record industry, Eddy Barclay, discovered me. My first song, "Bon soir Johnny," was a success, and suddenly I was caught up in a whirlwind of public appearances. I shared the stage with partners like Adamo, Mireille Matthieu, Charles Aznavour. General De Gaulle invited me to a soirée. My gowns were made by Dior and Nina Ricci; Paco Rabane designed his first metallic minidress for me. I felt compensated for the poverty of the first years in Paris.- From then on, was it a straight path to Hollywood and the white mansion with the Swimmingpool?- Oh no. Before I could have gotten spoiled by the glittering life of the stars, God sent me a reminder to reevaluate my priorities. I became seriously ill, bedridden for three years, and I had ample time to meditate. I realized then that love was the most important thing in life, that it could work miracles for individuals and peoples alike. When I met the handsome young American lawyer, George Rosen in Munich, I was ready to settle down and have a family. So he took me home to Hollywood, where our children were born, and I made every effort to be a good wife and mother. And then, the time came to build my dream palace. Not only did I dream it up, I picked out and bought all the materials, and I supervised every phase of the work. And here it is, the seaside mansion that inspired Hungarian composer János Bródy to write his hit music video "Santa Monica". ENGLISH PAGE by SUSAN JANCSO Your source of news and information since 1989 While preparing a fabulous meal, Ildy tells me about her past successes and future plans. She has several music cassettes with country and pop songs in three languages, and is working on new ones. With her song, "The Blind Guitarist", she helped build a home for the blind children of Mexico City. This summer, she plans to spend a few weeks in Hungary, and in the fall, the great adventure: she is going to China with Troy Cory, the first American singer to have visited that vast country, where 300 million Chinese watched his TV show. Ildy, we wish you luck, and lots of success in your new endeavors! Susan Jancso FIRST HUNGARIAN REFORMED CHURCH 12717 York Ave., Hawthorne, CA 90250 Ph.(310) 355-1475 Adm. GABE MANAGEMENT & LOANS Tel.: (818) 785-5773 Did you miss Easter? Many people did. They always do, every year. They have no part in it, not because they aren’t aware of it, but because they don’t believe it. Its message, its hope, its faith, and its joy have no significance for them. Dr. Bonis’ English sermon focused on John 20:24, 26, the story of Thomas, who missed the first Easter, and then found it one week later. When the other disciples told him that they had seen Jesus alive on Easter evening, he said bluntly: "I don’t believe it... unless I can put my finger in the nail-prints in His hands and feet..." Unbelief always says: show me, prove it! And it operates on the philosophy that "seeing is believing". It isn’t, of course, but that’s the popular myth of unbelief. However, Thomas was not a hopeless case. Doubt is not necessarily disastrous; it can be cured, j Judas’ case was much different. Betrayal is far worse than doubt Thomas became an apostle. 1 JUdas committed suicide. There is always hope for the doubted, but there is next to none for the traitor. Significantly, Jesus appeared to Thomas on that second Sunday night in the same upper room of prayer where He had shown himself a week earlier. And He came to Thomas on his terms! So low would Jesus stoop to save the skeptic! To remove the doubts of unbelievers', Jesus does this, and only this: He shows them the scars of the Cross. There is no other cure for skepticism. That’s how Thomas was | compelled to abandon his doubts and to exclaim in true faith: "My Lord and my God!" The Christian Church is Filled with unbelievers who were delivered from their unbelief when they saw ^ in faith the living Christ bearing the scars of the Cross. There is no excuse for missing Easter, for the risen Lord still shows Himself to men hearing the Gospel. MAY 7: after the service, lunch and meeting of the elders. Last Sunday after the service we were glad to hear Ilona Garay’s very informative talk on Hungarian embroideries, using for illustration her own collection and that of Lydia, too.
