AMERICAN Hungarian Journal Susan Jancso CLEANING HOUSE Cleaning house has a special significance for me. You see, it marks great crises and inner struggles in my life. Luckily it doesn’t happen too often -maybe once or twice a year. We have not had a cleaning woman since we came to America, so the state of the house faithfully reflects my state of mind: the better I feel, the more messy it is. Not too long ago I was hit by a stronger-than-usual attack of cleaning. I cure smaller attacks by pruning the trees, but this was somethnig else: I was touched by the icy breath of mortality, and I was shocked by the transformations of the human soul. I had to put things back in their place. Some people preserve the favorite things of their departed loved ones indefinitely. For years, sometimes decades, they keep the room just as it had been on the last day, they won’t even wipe the dust away. I knew such a person, the mother of my colleague and dear friend Marika Latabár, who had died in an airplane crash near Paris in 1962. Her mother simply could not accept the fact of her death. She would be waiting at the airport in Vienna or Zurich to meet the MALÉV crew, hug them, and ask: "When is my daughter coming?" Marika’s purse and sweater are probably still where she had tossed them carelessly all those years ago... I can identify with those who collect and preserve memories, because, to a lesser degree, I am like that myself. That’s why I find it harder to understand the other type, the ones who forget quickly because they do not want to remember. Somebody dies, and the next day all his personal belongings are gone, his clothes, his jewelry, even his pictures from the wall, as if he had never lived. Of course, it’s a form of self-defence. Life goes on, so the sooner, the better... These thoughts were on my mind when I started my latest cleaning spree. Perhaps it’s a good thing to discard immediately everything we no longer need. Only then can we make room for that which is new. Perhaps from time to time we have to clean house in our soul as well. Delete old text which is no longer current from our computer disk, and get ready to make new entries. I started in my husband’s walk-in closet. Funny, how much easier it is to sort out other people’s things than your own. I made such a good job of it, my husband did not recognize the place when he got home. He is still afraid to step inside. Next came the vacuuming. I had a little problem with that, because the vacuum cleaner was doing funny things. At first, it was not working at all, although it went through the motions; later I realized that instead of vacuuming, it was blowing the dust. I tried to fix it, my husband tried to fix it, but finally a simple solution did the job: I put my hand over the opening, and the air started to go the other way, right into Julius’s face (which is unfortunate, but I finally managed to clean the house.) Then came the more difficult task of cleaning the soul from any excess baggage. There are good rules to follow in such an undertaking: 1. Pick your friends carefully; 2. Always pay back your enemies; and 3. Know the difference between the two. Now here I am with a clean house and a pure heart, enjoying my newfound freedom, and the joys of a simpler life. "Our halls are empty" - I could say with the poet - but at least the air is I clean. Mr. Dobos is on a tour of the U.S. with his wife Eva, who was also present at the occasion. The host, Consul General András Márton, welcomed the guest who was then introduced by János Törőcsik. The presenter gave an in-depth analysis and historical overview of the problems haunting the Hungarian nation for centuries, and outlined the course of action to be followed. He talked about the lack of success - the series of crushed rebel-1 lions and revolutions, and of lost' wars - in our history which negatively affects today’s attitudes. He talked about Trianon, where the tragedy of Central Europe had started, of the years of Communism - the "Imperial Chronology", and the anti-history forced upon the nation. In 1989 something started which could be called "the revolution of feelings", the revival of religion and a sense of national identity, which has an important role in today’s politics. Mr. Dobos then told the audience about his two trips to * Croatia, and the suffering and perseverance he observed there. He said today’s slogan is to "Stay Put", to refuse to flee in the face of danger, and this goes not only for the Hungarians of the former Yougoslavia, but for the entire Hungarian nation, within and without the borders. After the years of running away, defecting, emigrating, fleeing, each and every one of us should stay where he is, to work and produce a little surplus which will bring honors to the nation. To stay put and survive, to break out of the vicious circle of accusations and judgmental attitudes - these are the tasks facing Hungarians today, including the Hungarians of the West. Hungary today has historical prospects - he concluded - but they need to be strengthened, not undermined. Regarding the situation back home, Mr. Dobos stated that the small nations of Europe enjoy a better chance in today’s power vaccuum. However, the situation of ethnic minorities still leaves a lot to be desired. Individual freedoms are guaranteed, but the freedom of minorities based on ethnicity is still lacking. Therefore, the Hungarian movements and parties in Slovakia have a threefold agenda: to defend their native land, including the Hungarian names of cities, communities and individuals; cultural autonomy; and territorial autonomy. He added that the "war of languages" may develop into a real war, in the literal sense. After the presentation, there was a question-and-answer period, while the guests consumed coffee and cookies. BUDAPEST Hungarian Parliament Reconvened After a six-week recess, the Parliament is at work again. The first day brought a tough debate even before they discussed the agenda. SZDSZ member István Szentiványi attacked Tibor Füzessy, a Secretary of State without specific budget, because of his statements at the Szárszó conference. Mr. Füzessy, who is in charge of Secret Service operations, made a controversial statement regarding the secret agencies of neighboring countries, whose "sole task is to intimidate minorities." Mr. Szentiványi objected to the issue being brought up before a wide public instead of being discussed in Parliament or before a committee. He said Mr. Füzessy showed poor judgment when he made his statement, and thus the very person responsible for national security endangered the nation’s security. Mr. Füzessy countered that the secret services mentioned by him know perfectly well what they are doing, and they are not particularly sensitive to publicizing it. DR.
