AMERICAN Hungarian Journal BUDAPEST Hungarians Living Abroad May Vote According to the Ministry of In­terior, approximately fifty thousand Hungarian citizens living beyond the borders may be able to vote in the upcoming elec­tions in 1994. The new election law is based on the consensus of the parties in Parliament - said Minister of Interior Péter Boross - but it still has to be accepted by Parliament. The first round of the elections will be held in May, the second in early June, 1994. The modification of the election law is has more symbolic worth than practical value, since the number of voters within Hungary is eight and a half million - fifty thousand cannot be expected to greatly influence the balance of forces in the country. Public Employees Consider Strike If the Mediating Council of Budget Institutions does not reach an agreement in August regarding the January 1st im­plementation of public em­ployees’ wage adjustment, a strike is possible in September. The government does not want to adjust public employees’ wages until 1995; however, the trade unions insist on the earlier date which is provided by law. If mediation attempts fail, a nation­wide strike is expected during the time of the debate of next year’s budget in Parliament. Participation Does Not Mean Rehabilitation The Christian Democratic People’s Party considers the dis­pute regarding Miklós Horth/s funeral in Hungary futile and ar­tificial. The party’s statement denies the false and malicious opinions that those who par­ticipated at the funeral want the unchanged continuation of the politics of the period between the two world wars. In their opinion, the view that the participation of members of the government is equivalent to the political re­habilitation of Miklós Horthy is a pure misinterpretation of the facts. The statement stresses that nobody can be rehabilitated based on the number of people attending his funeral - not Hor­­thy, not János Kádár, nor anybody else. It is foolish to draw conclusions from the number and position of the participants of this funeral. Ső-ersJoinTbigyán The 56-er Federation entered into a contract of cooperation with the Smallholders’ Party led by József Torgyán, and the the Torgyán Party. The organization assured the two parties of its full political support before and after the elections, provided the Smallholders fulfill expectations. The 56-ers have been considering other parties for a long period of time: they were wondering whether to join MDF, or the Hungarian Truth and Life benchmarked by István Csurka. What made them choose the Smallholders was their willing­ness to guarantee four conditions in case they make it into a position of power: moral and financial rehabilitation of former political prisoners, identifying and calling to account of former political criminals, return of wrongfully acquired property, and indem­nification to those who were displaced, interned, or whose possessions were nationalized. Water Pollution The water of the river Danube as it flows through Budapest is seriously polluted and therefore unfit for swimming. The danger to swimmers consists mostly of bacteria, viruses and fungi car­ried into the water from communal sewage. Only 20 per­cent of the waste water is purified, and even that only of organic materials. Besides, chemical pollutants are also found in the water. Therefore, public health officials strongly advise anglers against consuming fish caught in this area. UNGARETTI in Translation The first comprehensive volume of great 20th Century Italian poet Giuseppe Ungaretti in Hun­garian translation is now in the Budapest bookstores. The well­­known Italianist Ferenc Szénási selected the poems for printing and he was also one of the several translators. The volume has been long overdue, since Ungaretti is just as significant a poet as Eliot, Apollinaire or Garcia Lorca among his contemporaries. Ungaretti was born in Ale­xandria, Egypt in 1888. His parents and ancestors were from Lucca, Italy. He completed his studies in Paris, and when World War I broke out, he fougt at the Isonzo. One of his most sig­nificant poems, "The Rivers" was born in a moment of contempla­tion and self-discovery between two battles. In it, the poet iden­tifies the Isonzo with the other three rivers of his life. Another poem, from a later period, is con­nected to a tragic event, the death of his nine-year-old son An­­tonietto while the poet was teaching Italian in Brazil. In his ars poetica, Ungaretti says that the act of poetry is the ex­ploration of a continent of personal hell, because the poet feels he is different from the others - maybe better, but dif­ferent - and he stands apart, all by himself, with the special respon­sibility of discovering a secret and revealing it to the rest of humanity. Claire Kenneth on Hungarian Radio It was a pleasant surprise for the millions of avid readers of the works of Claire Kenneth, the world-famous authoress, when Kossuth Radio broadcast a birthday greeting for Claire on the morning of July 23rd. At the time of the phone call, it was still night in New York, but our Claire was not asleep. She was deeply touched by the thoughtful gesture and, as always, gave spontaneous and sincere answers to the reporter’s questions. She still speaks fluent Hungarian. To the question, what was the happiest moment of her life, she answered with emotion in her voice: - When our homeland was free at last! Claire Kenneth is the only Hun­garian writer whose novels have been translated into Japanese. Her books line the shelves of Her Majesty the Queen of England’s library in Buckingham Palace, and Queen Julianna of Holland commended her for her novels in Dutch language in 1961.
