CALVIN SYNOD HERALD AMERIKAI MAGYAR REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA- 3 -WAR OR PEACE WE ICE OE TEE TWO?-gst, Toward the end of the former 19th Century, a WORLD PEACE JUBILEE was held in the city of Boston on the American shore, on June 26, 1872. The greatest composer of waltzes, Johann Strauss was brought over from Vienna to conduct in person, his own ‘Jubilee Waltz” at the worldwide celebration of ‘permanent’ world peace. It was a spectacular performance. He conducted a chorus of 20,000, with 100 sub-conductors under his direction. It was a great salutation to America, the eternal peacemaker of the world. The special arrangement of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ in the Jubilee composition brought tremendous delight to the enraptured huge crowd. The electrified audience felt WORLD PEACE finally arrived and will forever stay! Unfortunately, not so! Soon after the 20th Century arrived. This turned out to be the Century of wholesale slaughter. In short in 2 more years the 21st will arrive and our 20th will enter into the book of world history as the bloodiest of all; the Century of massacre and bloodbath. In this 20th Century, there was World War I - killing 12 million; World War II - killing 51 million. The so-called ‘Socialist Revolution’ (Communism), killing 95 million. The Bosnian War, to date killing more than 300,000, which is only one of the more than 10 so-called 'small wars’. How timely is Jeremiah’s cry? “Peace, Peace, Peace - we say - when there is no PEACE! And there will be no real PEACE on earth until mankind will turn its face toward the real KING OF PEACE!” □CO MISKOLC - The famous Wooden Church - Deszka Templom, was burned down in the first week of December by an arsonist. A campaign has been started to rebuild the Church. It was built in 1938 in a unique Hungarian style. Bishop Vitéz was the assistant minister there from 1946-47 and preached at the Sunday afternoon worship services. The Synod would like to help in the rebuilding and is asking for your donations. Please send donations to our Treasurer, Mr. Wilburn Roby, 264 Old Plank Road, Butler, PA 16002-3810. □□□ The Zilah-Liget congregation is building a new church. Donations may be sent to the Treasurer designated: Zilah-Liget Church. The Christian Observer: Transylvanian Bishop Kalman Csiha’s The Light Through The Bars, recounts the incredible story of six-and-ahalf years in prison for the cause of Jesus. The Calvin Synod Herald most highly recommends this English-version of the 166-page long book with 30 immortal poems, written behind prison bars in the aftermath of the Debrecen World Alliance Meeting, with the motto: “BREAK THE CHAINS OF INJUSTICE!” The price of the book, including mailing, is only $11.24.
